I purchased a BX42S 3-point PTO chipper to use with my B2601HSD tractor. I just used it and it works great, but I can’t figure out how to keep the engine running when I get out of the tractor seat. I have searched for advice and done things in suggested order, but no luck. Including flipping the seat over.

Anyone know how, without modifying the seat switch? Videos I’ve seen for the chipper and this tractor don’t seem to mention how.

If I remember right, I simply unplugged the seat switch on my BX and that disabled it.

not sure about the B2601... you might have to make a jumper if simply unplugging it don't work.
Or put a ziptie on the actual switch plunger (if possible)

patiently awaiting the safety police for my suggestion...

IMG_0330.png This is the instruction from the B2601 operator manual.

It doesn’t say anything about flipping the seat forward. Some other models, such as my L, do require that.

Both the Owner Manual and Workshop Manual are available here:

It’s listed as B2301/B2601.

and to @NCL4701 I -have- been setting the parking brake. Which I’m fairly compulsive about doing anyway.

Maybe there is a switch on the parking brake lever that isn’t sensing that it’s set. I’ll look for that!

Thank you.

Just flip the seat up, and have the PTO lever to rear PTO and you are good to go

Thanks, however I’ve also tried that too. Tried that first actually, I had read that as a method for someone with a different model. I think I’ll crawl under today and look for a switch on the parking brake lock lever..

My PDF manual is different from the B2301B2601 shown above. It seems to be specifically for the B2601HSD. Here is what it says:

Stationary PTO
To park the tractor and use the PTO system (for chipper
or pump, for example), start the PTO system in the
following steps.
1. Apply the parking brake.
2. Make sure the shift levers are at NEUTRAL, and start
the engine.
3. Set the PTO select lever to rear only position.
4. Set the PTO clutch lever to engage "ON".
5. Set the engine speed to provide recommended rear
PTO speed.
6. Dismount the seat and tilt up quickly (engine will stop
if there is a delay in tilting up the seat).

Maybe I’m not quick enough. I’ll go try.

On the LX2610 there is a button on the dash called the 'stationary PTO' button. It is described in page 77 of the user manual. After you press it and hold it for a second or two an indicator light will come on. I don't know if that is relevant to your tractor.

After testing, still no success, but I have a clue. With the key on, brake locked, and rear PTO selected and PTO clutch lever in engaged position, but engine not running, I can hear a kill/run valve or relay respond to manually operating the seat switch. Pushing down on the seat switch (as if there is weight on the front edge of the seat) the relay clicks immediately but delays about 1/2 second before releasing when the seat switch is released. This would be enough time to get off and flip up the seat without the engine killing.

Unfortunately the seat doesn’t have enough weight to squish the pedestal down far enough to engage the seat switch. If the rear part of the seat were a bit heavier, the shift of the weight from the rear to the front might push the pedestal down enough. The seat has Kubota branding but might not be the right one?

I’ll try adding weight to the rear edge, see if that solves it.

If the procedure in the operator's manual is not working something is broken. Probably the seat switch or associated wiring.

If the seat has to be tipped forward that suggests its a "two in one" switch. I suggest you consult the WSM for some more reliable guidance on trouble shooting the OPC system.

If you have to quickly flip the seat forward as you exit the operator station, suggest you engage the PTO after you’ve exited and flipped the seat forward if at all possible.

I have to flip the seat forward on mine. If I had to exit the operator station with the PTO engaged and flip the seat forward before the engine died without falling on my face, I’d need to lose about 20lb, 10 years, and wear tennis shoes instead of logger boots.

I noticed that this statement in in a plural tense

2. Make sure the shift levers are at NEUTRAL, and start
the engine.

So do you have a high/low speed and a separate gear selector? Are they both in neutral?

Yes, all in neutral including the drive selector. Thanks for suggesting, I didn’t specify that in my description

The WSM I have (pdf) speaks about a seat tilt switch. My B2601HST doesn’t have one. I wonder if it’s because it’s outfitted with the rotating seat for use when the BH70 backhoe is attached. Here are the photos from the WSM.

I just got hit with a sudden rain shower. But I added a (temporary?) steel cable to prevent the seat from resting on the steering wheel, which gives the seat enough leverage to keep the seat switch barely squished down enough. Not sure if actual use will have too much vibration to keep it squished. IMG_4452.jpeg IMG_4453.jpeg IMG_4454.jpeg

YES… now that it seems to be working with the seat-tilt-limiting cable (wire rope) I also am not fast enough to easily get off and do the tilt in time. Getting off first is probably what I’ll do, as you suggested.

THE REAL SOLUTION

So, the tilted seat with the tilt-limiting cable worked great for a prolonged chipping session. But it still bothered me that I had to use a kludge to accomplish it. I did however notice the when the seat is released and sprung up in order to rotate it backwards for backhoe BH70 use, the seat switch assumes a 3rd position which is also “on” as if sitting. I think somehow if you have a BH70 there is a different seat which would explain the differences in the photos and not having a seat tilt switch. (I had rotated the seat to make sure my tilt-limit cable didn’t fowl that up.) So, I looked in the BH70 manual even though of course the backhoe isn’t mounted.

And here it is:
