I have a very good friend in Kettle Falls, WA who I used to work with when we both lived in Hawaii. I moved out of Hawaii in 2011, and four years ago after many years there he moved from Hawaii back to the house and property where he grew up. His mum bought the house in 1947 and she's lived there ever since although the whole family lived in Africa for a few years. He's on around 6 acres of mostly wooded land but has a very large fenced garden and some lawn areas. Mostly he needs to clear snow, move gravel, cut grass, cultivate and move dirt in their large garden, move lots of downed trees, do some trenching etc. His son could also put the tractor to use so no doubt a trailer is in his future to get the tractor from his place to his son's place about 8 miles away.

He's wanted a tractor for years and at 73 years old this will be his first. We went looking at tractors when I spent a few days with him and his mum over the New Year's holiday but it's slim pickings in that area. I'm always keeping an eye out for him and last week when I stopped by the local dealer there was a used L47TLB on the lot. It was recently traded in but was bought from the same dealer in 2018. It's a really nice machine with 575 hours on it.

It has the 3rd function with flat-faced couplers, the 3-point parts, and chains on all four wheels. It had a full service at around 520 hours which included the HST oil, filters, engine oil, filters, etc. It's currently in the service bay having the loader removed and all related pins cleaned and greased. I like the toggle switch to creep the tractor forwards and backwards while running the backhoe, a feature you don't get on other models of tractor that have a backhoe as an option. Also, the roll cage is a lot safer compared to the standard ROPS e.g. stopping a log rolling down the loader arms and onto the operator.

I'll be delivering the tractor to my friend the weekend of the 21st, and to say that's he's excited is an understatement. I'm really pleased for him, and we discussed his option to buy a lesser model for less money that would do much of what he needs, but he's ok with paying more for this commercial grade model.

Lots of photos to share.

Congratulations to your friend, he should be excited! You are never too old for your first tractor; only wish you had gotten one sooner.
And you are a good friend helping with this and enjoying this with him. It's obvious you are just by posting this. (y)

That's a solid looking machine. He'll definitely get a lot of work done with something so capable.

Tell him to get KTAC Insurance on it!
That way if him or his son clobers anything on it, it will get fixed for cheap!
Great option for a tractor newbie!

I did mention KTAC but he paid cash so not sure what he's going to do. Buying in MT saves him a lot of money since we don't have sales tax here. I think it's 8% where he is. I'll be coming through Sandpoint in a little over a week so hopefully you'll get to see the L47.

I asked the local dealer what it costs to have equipment hauled and they told me $4.25/loaded mile. I told my friend that he only has to cover my fuel costs so I estimate an average of 10mpg with the F-450 pulling the 30ft gooseneck loaded on the way out and empty on the way back. It's about a 600 mile round trip so it'll be under $300 for fuel.

The tractor isn't too big which should work well for him, and the operators station is very easy to get into and out of which is what he needs. Not too much of a step up either. Yes, @imarobot, I'm very excited for him and really looking forward to seeing all of the work he does with his new tractor.

I think you can buy KTAC insurance directly without financing it???

Careful I might just distract you and unload it real quick, that's a sweet tractor.

Oh, did you get hit with the 70 mph winds, we did, I was shocked to see just about everything blown around.
House did great though.

😂 Perhaps I should drain the fuel tank and remove the battery once the tractor is on the trailer, so as to make it a little harder for a quick getaway.

I think you're right about KTAC insurance still being an option for him. I'm not sure what his plans are in terms of insurance but will mention KTAC to him again.

It was windy here for sure, but according to the weather station on the deck I only had max 35mph winds at my place.

Looks like a nice one.

Hopefully, you will be able to coach him extensively regarding use and care.

When I sold my IN farm, I packaged my nearly new B3350 with FEL, snow plow, 6' MMM, 5' rotary cutter, chains, etc., with the farm as the buyer wanted it and I did not.

The buyer, in his mid 50s, had lots of experience in the construction trades, etc., but had never driven a tractor. I coached him extensively regarding use and safety, and pleaded that he always wear the seat belt (and read the operators manuals).

Despite my advice, within a very short time, he drove it off of one of the driveway bridges into the creek about 6' below, turning it over and nearly killing himself. He might not have survived had not a neighbor happened by to disentangle him and call the EMTs. Of course, he was not wearing the seat belt.

I'll not go into the other expensive mistakes he made regarding other issues despite forewarning.

We had 75 MPH gusts in Billings, yesterday.

LOTs of dirt in the air, something that I'm not acustomed to as a transplanted midwesterner.

That is a great looking tractor, and I’m jealous of that hydraulic thumb for sure (y) (y)

@McMXi that’s pretty nice of you to haul it for him too. Good on you sir!!!!(y)

That might be my first retirement project. (the hydraulic thumb)

I’m a +1 on the KATAC as well. Pricey, but it does CYA for a “noob”.

We are currently getting the storm system y’all must have gotton, except it grabbed some snow squalls since it visited you guys.

Got 6 inchs so far today…..They said we might get 20+ by Sunday night.

I just went and bought a “roof rake” and the roads are nearly impassable at this point.

It's generally much windier on the East side of the Rocky Mount Front. If you ever get to Browning, the wind is miserable for much of the year. Great Falls is very windy too.

It's no big deal delivering his tractor. I like road trips and I like the drive over to Kettle Falls through Sandpoint, ID and Priest River, and always enjoy the company of Mike and his mum. She'll make me a couple of really good breakfasts while I'm there.

It's my understanding that the thumb comes standard on the L47TLB. but it's that little joystick that I was really taken with. You don't need to get out of the seat when operating the backhoe to move the tractor forwards and backwards. Just raise the outriggers, and move the joystick to the right of the throttle in the photo below, then lower the outriggers and it's back to digging.

Looks like he's going to need some rear remotes or three! 😂

Yes, he wants me to show him all of the features and give him some form of orientation as to how to operate the tractor and backhoe. I'm not going to pull the backhoe off for him since he doesn't have any rear implements at this time. I did that many times with the BX25 so perhaps next fall I'll spend a weekend at his place and help him if he has a snow blower or rear blade by then.

I have already stressed to him that the greatest threat is rolling the tractor. It's a heavy tractor and has Rim Guard in the rear tires, and has a fairly low COG, so unless he does something stupid he should be ok. He's a mechanical engineer and has a good sense of the physics involved.

He calls me an enabler! 😂 He bought his F-250 Super Duty 6.4L diesel back in 2008 because I recommended it to him. I had an '02 F-350 Super Duty 7.3L dually at the time which I really liked and would tell him that he needs a bigger truck. He still has the F-250 and it's got something like 35k miles on it. He loves that truck though.
