Electric Vehicles. Can anyone make this make sense?

Many power companies sell excess energy, they have switching networks to pull that off.
Hard to do that when other utilities are facing the same problem of low demand. I don't know enough about hydroelectric plants like those that we have here in MT, and am not sure how quickly they can respond to changes in demand. Theoretically they have an endless supply of water, and it wouldn't take much to bleed power off to pump water back up to the lake or reservoir rather than reduce the output of the turbines.

Most dams have multiple units in parallel. They can turn units off/divert for any reason. They also turn them off for maintenance.

Better wording than mine.

Variable power in dams is generated by controlling water flow (volume) and pressure (head/elevation) to drive turbines, allowing for rapid, flexible adjustments to meet electricity demand. Reservoir-based systems can ramp power up or down in seconds, while run-of-river systems depend on natural, variable river flow.

to pump water up hill you need 1/2 PSI per foot. Say the 'head' is 100ft, that'd be 50PSI pump required + losses and such, so a solid 75 PSI. Now decide on how many GPM you need to 'refill' the reservoir to replace what you used. It's a numbers game.... 1000 cuft of water is 7,000 gallons, a mere drop in the bucket for what a small reservoir holds. You might have ,say 10 hours to 'refill'( overnight ?)

Sounds to me like this would make the most sense for pumping water uphill. Got a neighbor who uses one to lift from the creek into a tower to flow down over his water wheel for power generation.
A very cool concept i'd like to play with when i have spare time.

yeah ,they're great...old ones are noisy (constant thunk...thunk..thunk.... ), not efficient and low volume.
not suited for the huge amounts of water needed for a power generation station though.
There's lots of plans on the internet for them nowadays !

Getting back to the EV issue, our DIL has an EV and loves it.

Her mom has one and loves it too.

They do cause issues with travel. We had a family wedding out-of-state a while back.

My son wanted to take the EV, but they had to take his older, high-mileage ICE vehicle.

Similar, a buddy's daughter and SIL have a summer place several hours from their home in Maryland.

When they both have to drive, he takes 2x as long because he has to stop to re-charge his EV.......

I don't want one, but what works for them......

It's on my "things to tinker with if/when I get enough time" but have not gone that route yet....

As for an EV, I like the concept but it does not fit my life at all.

FWIW... My brother's been shuttling customers for local Chevy dealer with their batteryBlazer. Supposed to get 500KM on a full charge. He gets just over 100 KM in this 'cold' weather ( -10*C). Says it's great in the snow, cause it's so dang heavy !

In the end it's whatever works best for YOU that really matters. So far no EV pickup can replace my '97 F150.
And this is the real problem out here. They have mandated away under 25hp already…and ALL ICE in ten years. They have some screwball rules about eliminating trucks and railroad diesel as well….yeah right…that will end well.

But also, not deriding others for making different choices. I don't own an EV and don't see one in my short or long-term future, but I don't have a problem with the myriad reasons why people buy them. I'm going to focus on making my '98 Jeep TJ, '02 F-250 and '24 F-450 meet my needs for as long as possible, but I also enjoy seeing the cool and interesting technology on the road too. I've seen @North Idaho Wolfman's Cadillac and it's a stunning vehicle that obvoiusly works for them.

As with so many things, people are intent on "proving" that their choice is the best choice, not just for them but also for everyone else. I try to be open minded unless it's stupid, and there's nothing stupid about EVs.

Well, the mandates that everyone needs to switch to EVs is stupid. :)

I believe in the scientific method, and in an ideal world we'd all follow the science regardless of whether we like the outcome or not. But ultimately everything has always been and always will be about power and money. The former enables the latter.

There are a 100 difernt factors that effect eficency of an EV.

Heating systems on most EV's, what you so called super efficient electric heat, well isn't very efficient!

I'll bet they have the vehicle set to keep the temp in the vehicle warm all the time.

The drive system doesn't care too much about the cold weather.

We have only noticed a small / almost negligible difference in the winter cost of operation.

One thing to note: We have a garage that is at 60 degrees and most EV's need to precondition (heat or Cool) the batteries to charge them. We have not had the car go into precondition mode to charge.

I want a hydrogen / diesel engine pickup truck, that is powering a generator, that is powering the electric drive system on the truck.
Yes I just explained a hybrid train (Locomotive), or a giant mine truck.
It would be feasible to get 2,000hp and 60,000lbs of torque out of them. :p

My sadness comes from the rate of depreciation.

Reading in a car mag. at my dentist an article said expect 60% depreciation after 5 years and at the 10 year mark good for parts car.

They went on to say different rates for different models with highest end models holding life a little better.

That's expensive in my books

Because of the tech advancments from year to year every car/truck is getting like this.
When the new model comes out with better tech, the the old models lose their value real fast.
It doesn't matter the make or model,, they aall do it.

Houses are doing the same thing, if it's not equipped with the latest and greatest appliances, fixures, options and tech it loses value real fast.

....But once no longer running, it is garbage and in some cases, cannot be recycled at all so we have this big hunk of material of questionable safety just sitting there, waiting for the rain to eventually turn it back into dirt (while the same rain is flattening mountains).
Being on the fabrication side of the coin I get to deal with "recycled" cars...from the perspective they just push them into the kettle and melt them down, then adjust the mix to meet the specifications and slab it. Mild steel used to be 1020 Plate or 1018 Bar, now it is A36 with very relaxed material properties. Can't tell you how many times a machining center would hit a "hard spot" (chrome) and break a cutter. That's pretty much handled at the mills nowadays, however Oregon brand chainsaw chain has the chrome deposit issue--you need a diamond file if a tooth has "the shiney stuff."

I'm pretty sure that's part of why Husqvarna brought their chain manufacturing back in-house as the manufacturing centers in China were not making quality chain. Husqvarna saw production moved to China (Husqvarna themselves announced the change) and the quality hit the bricks according to many saw owners and repair shops (note I'm not saying they make a bad saw, only their quality isn't what it used to be according to the guys who run primarily Husky saws).

A36 is a hot rolled structural steel and totally fine in that application. 1020, 1018. 1045, and a host of other "mild steels" are readily available with or without CERTS.

A36 machines like crap and any shop that loads it in a machining center has only themselves to blame for the results..
