I have a hard trifold but it won’t fold up along the widow so blocks tall things at the front third of the bed.

I recommend that you look at some motorized version since the trifold is either closed or open and not really that easy to open to sit stuff in the bed. You have to open the tailgate then open the cover if you want to sit something fairly close to the front of the bed.

I also recommend that you get a latch system that can release both sides of the cover at the same time. Mine has a separate handle on each side of the two folding sections so you have to walk back and forth to undo (or redo) the latches.

I remember that WeatherTech had a nice one but it was pretty costly, and I don’t think it was motorized either.

Lots of good suggestions here.

Covers/caps are a very personal thing IMHO.

My dad loved hard caps……….I hate them.

I had a ‘canvas snap on’ style for the last 15ish years on my Ram….(not the Snap-On tool company)

I kinda liked it, but in the winter you had to have “Thumbs of Steel” to get the last few snaps…snapped……therefore, many times I rode around with the last 2 or 3 “unsnapped"

But it was nice to be able to completely remove it and “fold it up” pretty easily.

I think it was a DP brand if I recall correctly.

My new one, I have had for about 6-8 months………...

I purposely found the “cheapest one I could find” cause I was convinced it was going to be a “throw away” item, since its only intended purpose was to keep “prying eyes” from knowing what was in my bed when I stopped for gas and what not.

But its still there…………

I am WAY HAPPY with it for 150 bucks……...

It’s kind of a PITA to roll it up every time I fuel up, but for the dough….it works pretty good.

I have a roll up tonneau cover from Agri Cover on the last 3 trucks I have owned. It’s the one in the link below. I have had almost 40” of snow on them before when we had some big Nor’Easter’s, and they have held it fine. To me, they are worth there weight in gold to keep the snow out of the bed with the stuff I keep in there. It’s easy to take the snow broom out and push the snow off.

N.Y,
I have a back flip on my Ranger and it works great. No leaks and fairly secure. Bought during the pandemic and had manufacturing problems with the original they sent and they sent a replacement out the next day. Very easy to remove if you need full bed access. My Chevy had the high desert package with hard removable factory covers that were very heavy but the side boxes were nice like the Rams. That was very secure but extremely expensive.

Keep it coming….great advice so far…..
Congratulations! That’s a good looking machine.

what engine and trailer towing set up did you get?

to your question, only thing I can offer is I have had 2 tonneau covers that I bought for myself and I have used or borrowed others trucks that had covers:

1. My brother had a dodge (he was an abused child😉) and he had a one piece fiberglass top that had struts and it lifted up from the back and the sides overhang the bed rails.
Pros: it never froze shut, and it made an awesome top to shoot prairie dogs off of and a key lock.
Cons: it was aweful inconvenient to get anything out of beyond an arm reach. Mostly water tight but wind at speed could blow water up over bed rail (no seal) and into the bed

2. friend had a soft cover
Pro, you could get it out of way pretty easy (snaps like a boat cover)
Cons: he had it broke into many times and eventually gave up on repairs. Not durable and not much to stop someone from ripping it open.

3. Last Ford I had an extang tri fold solid aluminum cover.
It sat up on top of bed rails and was simple clamp on install. Light weight easy on / off. However could not fold flat up to cab. Froze to bed rails if left out. Solution was sleep a putty knife in the cab and just have to love it a little. To open it had spring tensions utters and in general was water tight until the seals began to age between the panel. No lock. Tailgate had to open to unlatch the cover. It was fine except the tailgate would freeze to the seal. Had to unlatch from each side and if trailer connected walking back and forth each time forget something after you close tailgate. Install was super easy. (Just clamps up front to hold it on

4. Current truck has a Lomax and it is really low profile and required install of a rail but the cover sits really low. Thru fold solid aluminum diamond plate. So far it has not froze shut but it’s only been out a few times in the 2 months I have had it. TBD but so far no leaks. If folds flat to cab and had brackets/stays that hold it away from cab so as not to damage the cab or window. Open mechanism is a string and it opens easy from one side. If f the sting breaks I suspect I will ask @Runs With Scissors for some vocabulary lessons (he has mentored me previously😉). So far so good but me and lomax still on honeymoon. Opens from. one side though so that is nice. Install was easy.

I bought both from etrailer and very happy with their service and product videos and i would buy from them again.

to me something’s to consider are:
1. Do you want it to fold flat to cab and do you car if it touches the cab?
2. Latch mechanism and how you want to open. I think if not pulling a trailer maybe doesn’t matter.
3. Do you have a camera on top of your cab looking into the bed and can you use that if a tonneau cover folded up?
4. Do you have a goose neck or fifth wheel and camera and or can you fold up and still use the goose’s neck or have to take the cover on off. (Ease of install would be a factor here IMO if plan to take on and off)
5. Do you care how it locks?
6. Is park outside and deal with snow, rain, ice, I’d not want to have it freeze shut regularly.
7. If you have expensive coolers that you are attached to, get measurements that it will fit before buying the cover. It will change if you add a bed mat or liner. (My previous truck this created a constraint is why I mention).
8. Do you plan to set stuff periodically on top of the cover? Some have weight ratings, some don’t.
9. The way they fit may depend on if have a bed liner or not. Get that figured out first.

I am not sure you asked for all that or still reading, but that’s what I would sort out before dropping a grand or more.

if still reading I hope it helps.

congrats on the new truck!
This 2500HD is the 6.6l gasoline engine with the 10-speed Allison. I think the only alternative is a 6.6l diesel (?).

I didn't get any specific trailering package, although I deleted the 5th wheel kit. Truck comes equipped with OEM trailer package/brake controller, etc. I've also never owned a trailer - - I haul everything in the truck.

I appreciate all the decision points:
  • No trailers at all. Haven't had a need to a convenient place to store one on 7 acres. Doubt that will change right away.
  • No cameras anywhere except tailgate backing camera.
  • Truck has a spray-on bedliner - last truck had one, and in 8 years scarcely had a mark - - will always have that for a liner
  • Truck is ALWAYS outdoors - not sure it would fit in garage(?) - be close. Do the mechanisms freeze up routinely?
  • Latches and security are a concern, but not a huge one. Now retired, truck is not out-and-about as much as before. No close neighbors or traffic.....
  • Don't have any coolers, etc. looking to accommodate - just trying to get some stuff out of the elements on occasion.
  • Snowload would be my first concern with a cover - - we're forecasted for a dump Sunday of 12-18" - have seen 30"+ several times...
PS - I've seen some criticism of the "fold to the cab" designs marking up the rear window or truck - - can't you just use ratchet strap(s) back to the rear of the box to pull/keep it back and against the rods holding it up?!?!?

I've had 12-16" of snow on my 25+ year old rollup, no issues however there's a big difference weight between 'white fluffy' snow and 'lake effect' snow !
Jay - - that's a fact. Several years ago we had 10-12" of wet stuff in April.....wow was it heavy. This is going to be dry snow this weekend.

locking mechanisms used on diamondbacks are pretty good. I wouldn't hesitate to leave anything in the back of the truck when locked up. As I mentioned, no issue whatsoever for snow load.

Should you decide on one, make sure to look thru the "outlet" listings on their site. They typically are discounted quite a bit. I got one, and you wouldn't be able to tell that it was a blemish. If I recall correctly, they show the "defects" on each unit listed on their "outlet" page.

They are located in Philipsburg, PA (near Penn State). Not sure where you are in NY but maybe you could pick one up and save on shipping.

N.Y,
Here's an old video showing how my Bakflip went on. I don't think the exposed gaskets would do well outside when exposed to constant sun. In the winter after opening it does take some time for them to lay flat and seal after closing. Also things like nuts and branches dropping from trees would dent the thin aluminum skin. Luckily mine is a garage queen.

I've gotten some great recommendations:
  • Bakflip - 3x
  • Access - Agri Roll - 2x
  • Diamondback - 2x
  • Extang - 2x
  • Weathertech - 1x
Keep them coming - and more importantly - if there's things to avoid... (n)

My Bakflip has a soft rubber strip across it that hits the cab, has never left a mark.

Agree - small included rubber bumpers on panels completely protect the cab's paint. If you damage the cab, it is your fault.

8+ years in the Georgia sun, and the rubber hinge sections look new.

Good day.

I’ve never had the mechanisms freeze ,what has freezed on my cover that sat on the bed rails (seal between the cover and bed rail). Was the seal would freeze to bed rail and top of tail gate (again a seal here)…solution insert puddy knife and slide around the sections you wanted to open. Easy peasy.

fold to cab…check this one out(pictures and video…it will hold it from cab. The other thing you could do is put some foam where you think it might hit the glass or cab if some other brand.
.

Whether you really plan to drive with it up or not IMO it is helpful to be able to lift it up (some the section to the cab don’t lift…and it you have something up against the cab that can be a bit of a pain. You could always put a blanket or something there if ever need to fold it up just for access.

if snow load a concern, ideal is ask you wife to build you a new barn tha is 60x40 with a 10’ door and high ceilings so you can have a loft. 😂. Otherwise I’d look for the covers that are solid aluminum and weight rated

good call on the bed liner when new👍

curious.. when a trifold won't totally fold up just how can you secure a fridge or mechanics tool chest to NOT move ?
Take the cover off or get creative with straps…I’ve been there. That’s why I think you want want to fold up.

This is a good thread @RCW . There is no one answer for all of us and it's always interesting to see what others have and like. I've had various bed caps and tonneau covers over the years so I see the appeal.

I had one of those “foldable cages” on my 02 Ram.

It really liked it. It worked great for preventing things from “rolling forward” when I braked.

I kinda miss(ed) it.

But the truck had to go……Could not take the “boring’ness” of having an auto-magic transmission. ;)

We have used roll up covers for years on all our company truck.
This is the cover we use.

I tried to attach a picture but could not get it to work. I will try to get on on later today
