I've been Googling, searching and cannot find the name of an older .22 lever action. I think it may have been a Marlin. It was a takedown model that came with a small padded case that only fit when the rifle was disassembled.

There are several. Marlin has the 39A and "Papoose", Ruger makes a couple, Henry makes a survival .22 that takes down into several piece.

There are several models that come to mind that fit your description. Really need more information and if the case was a factory case or an aftermarket or home built case. Of course Marlin model 39's and predecessors could be one of those rifles.
Possibility that it could be a Stevens Crackshot as these rifles are takedown, and while being a falling block action , due to the under lever , they have been called lever actions.
We can rule these out being they are not lever actions as the OP mentioned.

Maybe my memory is defective, but i think it was something by Marlin, lever action, factory soft case with model designation embroidered on it.
I spent so much time unsuccessfully searching this morning it's starting to look like it was only my imagination.

Lever actions always appealed to me. My preference is a straight stock. The biggest caliber I have is a .444 and the oddball is a Winchester 9410 (well then mare's leg is kinda different). Once in a while there may be glass on one but aperture is the favorite.

Original post was nothing more than a statement of frustration, followed shortly by op questioning their own mental condition and admitting problem might be only their imagination. Despite no request and at best, very few facts, a picture of rifle was posted in less than 1hr & 15min.
The point I hope to make is that I've always been skeptical of posts like "Help, my tractor won't start,why?" I'm often reassured when the reason and remedy are posted but unlike this case, solutions normally require several questions,amswers and 2-5 days before fruition. I tip my hat and if not doing so already, urge you to offer valued services to law enforcement, national security and Amber Alerts.

All Marlin 39's are essentially 'Take Down' by design. The newer one pictured has a cross bolt safety I believe and a dandy case. But any 39 can be 'taken down' by simply removing one screw (thumb screw).

Oddball "survival" guns - I worked with a guy who had an Armalite AR7. It had more than its share of malfunctions. I remember the writer in one gun magazine describing it as "looks like a hippo smoking a cigar".

A 22 rf Colt Diamondback was one of those guns on my want list but never happened. Couple of really nice Woodsman's and Hi-Standards but no quality wheel gun.
