Finally got to play work with the forestry winch.

This thing is awesome!

Here's the better half hauling smaller logs.

Looks like fun. How does that attachment work? Is it PTO driven? There doesn't seem to be anything in the hydraulic ports so I'm guessing it must be.

As a note, that can be dangerous with a top-heavy leaner. This year I had one pop as I walked 10' away to put the saw down after step (5). Thankfully I was 10' away, but it did damage.
That is a good point. It is not a cut you can use on any tree and needs to be used with due consideration first - like any method. Looking at it, you start with a smallish based tree and then you bore thru the center of the hinge area, The remaining hinge is all that is holding the tree from falling just as is the case for the traditional cut and wedge method - the hinge is the only holding wood while pounding the wedge . So, that hinge has to be sound enough and large enough to do that job. I should have added that you should leave a heavier than normal hinge to compensate for it's lack of width.

Picked up a job box for the RTV. Initially, I was going to put it in lengthwise but it took up too much space. Sideways gives me more usable space and it will be easier to access the toolbox.

Removed a cedar that was about 10 inches at the stump and graded the surface to connect my two chicken coops. I started off with 8 birds (two of which had gender identity crises) which was reduced to 6 in the coop on the right. Next thing I knew, I had 18 more in brooders in my basement that would be demanding living space much sooner than later. Ok, so I built the larger pen on the left, with full intention of taking down the one on the right. We no sooner got the younger ones housed and the older ones assimilated in with them than the missus decides we need more birds to occupy the old coop and run on the right which I had planned to demolish. Suddenly, we had 40 birds ranging from 15 months old to 15 days old. and feeding them in two places has gotten quite annoying. It's a lot harder to assimilate new birds into a flock if they weren't raised in the flock. So, we (read SHE) decided to join the two pens to expand the run area for the smaller coop and to let the two flocks chit-chat through the fence with no danger of them harming each other. Mind you, she's working at TSC, and I'm retired, so I'll give you three guesses who does most of the chicken tending, coop building, and carpentry, and the first two guesses don't count. But, happy wife, happy life. I NEVER expected her to get so crazy about chickens. Our 20th anniversary is in February, so it just goes to show that you can never fully know someone. I wanted enough birds to supply us with eggs after the egg producers went in cahoots with the Gubmint to get away with monopolizing the egg market. I had NO INTENTION of raising enough birds to supply half of our little town with eggs. But here we are.

I've got some pine tops to chip and will cover most of this with the chips for a deep bed run which requires a lot less maintenance and cleaning. We use pine pellets inside the coop on the right to keep the floor desiccated and that also gives the birds a place to roll in the dirt and dust. We also put barn lime down in there to keep the mites at bay and the ammonia levels to a minimum. The yard on the left has 89-10 gravel in about half the run and inside the coop, and the 'mosh pit' is a deep bed with chips and stuff that I've accumulated. The girls have certainly pointed out which they prefer (the chip beds), and it also seems to draw worms and insects in for them to munch on.

So, the two coops will become a single duplex coop and keep me in plenty need of the tractor. I never realized how handy a tractor is for having chickens.

Still 39w x 41D left of the bed and I left enough space for the window screen to open.

We got a little snow yesterday. Used the snowblower to clear the driveway and around the wood sheds.
Would like to cut wood tomorrow but it is supposed to be 15°f with a steady wind. A little to cold for me.
Probably go to the shop and work on some projects.
Next time I get in the tractor to do work it will turn 400 hours.

Not the Kubota but.......my wife and I headed to her horse barn this morning as the barn manager has 5 kids and we have none so we wanted to help her get things done ASAP to get her home to her kids on Christmas Day. I figured I would be swapping water buckets, picking stalls and filling hay nets but the manger was like "hey, do you think you can work the tractor here as the manure pile is out of control and the workers just keep dumping more trailer loads of stall strippings out side the pile......?"

She showed me the pile and what a mess it was and then showed me the tractor......she kept saying it was "electric", no idea what she was talking about perhaps she meant "hydrostatic" but she had it started and warmed up in the indoor arena......so I hopped on....John Deere 3033R.....decent rig. Different enough to not be a Kubota but similar enough to feel comfy quickly. Certainly not a piece of crap by any stretch.

At first it kept stalling on me when I dug into the pile and I was surprised as a rig this big should have no issue.......come to find out they had this thing in High on the transmission or "C" in JD speak I dropped it into "B" which is more mid range and was able to consolidate the pile and pile it up as it should be. They were pretty thankful as the guy they pay to do this had clearly been slacking.

I liked some things on the JD but I prefer the Kubota Trendle pedal, probably as I am used to it. The loader was certainly powerful BUT seemed a little more "rickety" and wobbly than I would expect and took some getting used to as it wasn't "confidence inspiring" initially.

Overall I was glad I had solid loader skills from working my own 2601 a bunch ........the girls got the horses all set and were stoked the manure pile was finally looking tidy when I was done....

Pic below from when my friend texted me "Merry Christmas, what are you up to?"........."shoveling poop" was my answer.

Why not ?

Probably didn't really need it, but used the forks to carry a new washing machine around the house and to take the old one away and dump it in the trailer.

Every home needs a forklift.

Kudos to you for helping out on Christmas day!
I also screw up with the pedals every time I use the JD our church has too.
The smooth front loaders on the Kubota are tough to beat.

probably as I am used to it.
I think that's the main thing ... Takes me a bit of time to get use to my pickup, after getting out of my Kenworth after 3-4 weeks ...

I'm also a lot more experienced on my Massey Ferguson than my Kubota ... The Massey has the same pedals as the JD, and the hand throttle is "backwards" on the Kubota! Massey is push forward to increase RPM, Kubota is pull back to increase RPM ...

I did re-arrange the barn yesterday a bit, so I could drop the finish mower to get ready for my new 3pt forks, and make it possible to park my pickup in the barn, and still get a tractor out without having to move the pickup out ... When I bought this place 4 years ago, I thought ... "What am I gonna do with that huge barn?" Now it's over full, with stuff double stacked ... Glad I got forks for the loader!

I have two Kubotas and I have to be careful and take a few minutes to think when I switch from one to the other. Both are gear drive but the L3010 has F/N/R on the column with the gear shifter by my left thigh and hand throttle (which I use a lot in the woods to free my foot for steering brakes and diff-lock) is pull down to increase. The M5640 is F/N/R by my left thigh with gear shifter on the hump and the hand throttle is push up to increase. In a semi crisis muscle memory can be a problem when switching to the other tractor after not using it for a while.

I been summoned by @WI_Hedgehog!

Sorry I haven't been very active lately. I been meaning to make a post. With the new full time job, I just haven't had time and now I barely have enough time to use the tractor anymore. My dad has been using the tractor more than me now!

I simply just don't have the time anymore which kinda sucks but I'm hoping when it's warmer I'll be able to do tractor stuff after work and on the weekends and vacations. Just something I need to balance out.

I'm excited though because when it comes time to purchase a box blade and other attachments, my wallet won't be hurting as much! So there is an upside to all this.

I have a tractor job lined up in the spring, I know someone who is getting 30 yards of top soil to level out his property so the Kubota is gonna have its first paying job under its belt. Should pay for the box blade!

IMG_4510.jpeg

I was able to plow the driveway, on Christmas Eve which was nice! The mirrors are for my dad, I find them useless to me but he likes them. It's been fun teaching my dad how to use the tractor. But the Kubota has been running good, I mean its an L2501 🤷‍♂️

I been on the fence about purchasing a snow pusher instead of the plow. Part of me wonders if it would be better than the plow because it mounts closer to the pins versus sticking 2 feet away. My dad is struggling using the plow, it's way different than the side by side and a truck. It doesn't take much and you're digging into the ground haha.

OH! Update on the ballast box. I thought it would be better for plowing but I really didn't like the way the tractor felt with all the extra weight on the rear, so I took it off and it plows better without it. No idea why! It was a night and day difference to me. I think because the tires are filled and the provides the increase in traction whereas the additional weight behind the tractor just made it feel like it didn't want to stop on the snow. I'm not expert, I just know it feels better plowing without the ballast box, again I'm pushing not lifting so that might be the difference there.

I got the mini split installed in the garage too, it's been lovely keeping the tractor warm and the snow melted off.

Anyways, I'm doing alright. I had some ups and downs but still kicking around. I been enjoying my new job, got to drive a 2024 F-350 at work and now I want one but don't wanna pay for the gas lol. But dang that truck drove sooooo well!! Felt like a real truck. It felt like it could just go anywhere and it was nimble even. It sounded sweet with that 7.3L Godzilla engine!

Well hope ya'll had a great Christmas and if I don't see you again, have a happy New Years as well!

I love those mirrors for when I have to run on the road to the farm next door. Nice to keep an eye on the possible traffic behind me.

Kids lost my axe, I found it a couple weeks ago with my front blower on the L3240. Shear pin didn’t break, so the drive shaft out of the gearbox did. I thought there must have been a regular bolt in there but when I replaced it today ( along with a new drive shaft from Messick’s) I found it was an actual shear pin. What gives?
