I assumed I have short horned toads because of the distribution. I believe this is a Texas horned toad on the northern end of its range.
Crap, I just burned 13 brush piles where I saw the horned toad. I hope I didn’t destroy their ecosystem. I can see how the decaying wood would attract ants, which would feed the horned toads. I will look around the other 40+ brush piles to see if I can find more horned toads.
(JK about the TCU shirt, WSU & KSU at my house)
Well they like the burned up piles too, I think they get minerals and other insects from the ashes. I often see the turkeys taking ash baths in my old piles as well. So I try and have a balance of brush piles vs burned piles.
The quail also thrive in brush piles during the winter months.

First Bluebird pair of the year showed up over the weekend. They think they're Robins since they keep attacking their reflections in the window. They make nice Traeger ornaments though. I do love Bluebirds, Nuthatches and Hummingbirds.

Sunrise over the Mission Mountains and Swan Range yesterday morning as I was on my way to a friend's ranch to help out with the yearly youth hunting license program. My dog had a great morning with a bunch of kids cuddling and petting her. ☺ Every student (40 or so) passed both the written test and the practical, which consisted of shooting rifles and shotguns, building a fire and tracking. There were more female students than male students this year.

It is officially spring - Rufous has arrived (amazingly the same day every year +/- 1 day). The second shot is an Annas Female. DSC00754.JPG DSC00751.JPG

What?! I won't see a hummingbird here until end of April or May. I guess that warm air coming off the Pacific Ocean makes Vancouver Island a nice spot for these little guys so early in the year.

We are lucky enough to have Annas all year round but we had an unusual cold stretch in January that seemed to have had an impact, sadly. Rufous is a snow bird and very consistent one; back the 24 or 25 of March.

I was wondering what you folks use for a camera.
I used a Canon G1X for the last few 20 years before that I shot with Nikon F cameras. The job I had required me to have a Digital camera and the Canon felt better than than the Nikon of the time. Last week I bought a new Nikon Zf so I could use the many Nikkor lenses I have . It feels great.

Canon D20, Canon D60 and Canon D90 with too many lenses! Tried to go mirrorless but they felt just too light for my liking. Enjoy your new Nikon.

Were the bear and the deer in the same field, and at the same time?
On that occasion they were. Many times one or the other or even black bears mixed in as well.

You are using your old Nikkors (manual focus) with the new Zf mirrorless? I know that works but the new lenses made for the mirrorless cameras are really sweet in the way they instantly focus and lock on to a subject. Not to mention the stabilization - up to 5 stops which makes for handheld shooting in low light situations doable.

I have a whole collection of Nikons down in my basement - started with Nikon when I was a Navy photographer back in the 60s. And lots of lenses. Now I shoot with a Panasonic G9. Great camera, and being a micro-four thirds format the lenses are a lot lighter than full frame. There is no comparison between the Kodachromes I shot years ago with my Nikons, and the digital photos shot with the Panasonic. When I scan the Kodachromes, even the K25 stuff, they don't look nearly as good as the digital shots. Grainy, and nowhere near the dynamic range.

Using an adapter, I do use my micro-Nikkor on my Panasonic G9 to copy photos and some of the large-format negatives I shot years ago. Being a flat-field lens, it works well for that.

Panasonic G9 shots:
