Low gear with appropriate RPMs to get PTO up to speed, but it doesn't take too much of a hole to catch the anti-scalp wheel and particularly when fully extended will put a lot of leveraged force on the front corner of the mower deck.

Using the factory level indicator, couldn't you mark the rod with tape or paint when pallet forks are level at ground level, 1 ft high, 2 ft high, etc?
