On my L245DT I used a new Kendall Jackson wine cork to plug the hole as soon as I removed the filter. (my daughter used to work fo KJ and collected a sack of new corks) Of course, if you are going to change the fluid just let it drain without plugging the hole.

Not to sure about your L175, but my L245 has a rubber "O" ring between the cover and tractor.
