AMP had plants all over south central Pennsylvania. It is a shame that we lost nearly all of it. I did a lot of work in the connector industry and some of it was for AMP.
It wasn't just AMP. There were many companies that employed a lot of people in our area. Of course many of the jobs were in manufacturing. Some were like Armstrong, Grinnell and RCA that were household names beyond the immediate area. There were also many other factories, foundries, furniture and shoe manufacturers, etc. It was a blessing to work for some of them and almost a curse to work for others. My stepdad retired from Armstrong and had good benefits for him and mom till they died. To get employment at some of the good places you had to know somebody.
Others not so much. I worked in a foundry while attending high school and they would hire anyone. One of the molders frequently went for a liquid lunch on Friday and didn't return till Monday. The company tolerated his behavior because not a lot of people wanted to work there.
Between here and Harrisburg there was Steelton, home to Pennsylvania Steel/Bethlehem/etc. I still recall the smoke and smell while driving through the town. Seemed like there would be no end to all the hustle and bustle. Then old timers started grousing about all that "Japanese junk" starting to show up. At first a lot of it
was junk. Remember the first Honda (car)? Things have changed since then.
