Hello everyone!

Didn't really see a new member area so thought I would introduce myself here. For those that I have met already on TractorByNet, this is for the most part a cut-and-paste from what I posted there.

As an introduction, I am a retired active duty Coast Guard/Navy (29 years CG/4 Navy) Chief Warrant Officer who is still working for the Coast Guard in a civilian capacity in Houston, TX. I retired in 2008 in D.C. to take a CG civilian job there. In 2012, I was offered a CG job in Houston (had been stationed in Houston from 1996-2000 while still active) and, with a CG active duty son and grandson here, my wife was not going to let me turn it down. We moved here in January 2012 and bought a big home in the suburbs. Within a year we wished we would have rented first to get the lay of the land instead of doing what we had always done...race around three counties with a realtor looking for a home in a subdivision.

After some starts and stops this year with buying and selling undeveloped acreage we ended up finding a down-sized home on 7.5 acres in Alvin, TX. About 5 of the acres is currently mowed and it truly looks like a park setting with Live Oaks, Water Oaks and Pecans (plus too damn many Chinese Tallows). The rest is thick woods/brush bordering the property. My wife and I never thought we would want to mow 5 acres of grass but it is so nice looking we will keep it the way it is at least for awhile until we figure out if it is going to be too much.

After many visits to different tractor dealers, constant searching/reading on this and other forums and discussions with a few people at work that own tractors I recently placed an order for a 2015 Kubota L4060HST with FEL, Land Pride pallet forks and 6' rotary cutter. I am also looking at getting a root grapple from Everything Attachments. I'll admit that it was hard to pull the trigger on this tractor due to cost but I wanted something that would last us the rest of our lives and that was something that my wife could more easily operate. The L4060 should fill the bill.

I look forward to continuing my tractor and attachments education that I have received on this great forum and, who knows, I may actually develop enough wisdom to some day pass some of it on. Thanks all!

Glad to have a new member in here. We try to help out or try to any tractor or implement problems.
I'm pretty close to you, east side of Houston, also a place in Huffman,Tx , another 30 miles north of here.
Looks like you're getting a great combination. You'll love the grapple. It's a major labor saver.
Take care and enjoy the new toys.

Welcome and congrats on the new machineI

My wife (retired USAF MSgt) runs my HST machine and really enjoys helping me when I am doing projects, like moving boulders or other heavy loads. Good for you guys. Hopefully, you'll have an indoor spot to store that beauty coming your way.

There are no stupid questions. These machines come with an Owner's Manual but no "OPERATIONS MANUAL." We all learned by doing and scared ourselves a few times along the way. If you need a hand or have a question, feel free to ask. Uploading pictures really helps too.

Great to have you aboard!

Hi James,

Nice to hear from a fellow Houstonian! When we were stationed here before we lived just across the lake from you in Atascocita. We thought about buying up there but my job is located at Ellington Field so we decided to live south this time.

I will certainly enjoy the toys when they come!

Regards,
Larry

Hi Ray,

Thank you to you and your wife for your service!

Your comment about the owner's manual is something I had wondered about and now you verify what I had suspected. Earlier this year I went to a tractor safety course which was pretty informative but it was not an indepth "operators" course. I have found some pretty good YouTube videos online and am certain I will be back to the internet once I actually have my tractor...right now I don't know what I don't know.

"...right now I don't know what I don't know. "

That's where we all started. Some of us had other machines prior to the Kubota but even that doesn't always help because, as was my case, my Kubota has way more power and capabilities than my old Ford did. I scared myself with my Ford and I did a couple times with my new tractor.

The key thing a lot of new users are not aware of is how easy it is to turn a tractor upside down. That is why they all come with ROPS today. Keep your loads as low as possible, keep the machine on flat ground when lifting heavy loads, and always head straight up hills and straight down them.

A good friend of mine rolled his machine while grading a steep hill crosswise. He bailed and tumbled about 50 feet to the bottom of the hill before hitting a fence. He immediately got up and saw the machine hesitate on the hill as it rolled over on the top of the ROPS before tumbling down the hill, landing right where he had been, seconds before. Howie was 77 when that accident occurred and other than scrapes, he was fine. Had he not moved, he would have been crushed. He had to have his tractor rebuilt after that accident.

I was trying to pull a tree out of the ground. The FEL wouldn't budge it. So, I decided to slowly back up and loosen up the tree. What could possibly go wrong? I had my chains low. I was in low range 4WD. I backed slowly.

Before I knew it, the tractor tipped forward, lifting the real wheels off the ground about a foot. I immediately unloaded the FEL and the rear tires hit the ground. Had I gone any farther and the center of gravity gotten higher, I could have tipped to the side and fallen over. (The front axle just pivots and can lead to an inadvertent tilt.) It happened so smoothly, I could hardly tell I had tipped except for the weird angle. Scared me!

Take your time. Enjoy your new machine.

Thanks Ray...fortunately, it is very flat on my property but you definitely have given me some things to think about, especially related to tree removal as I have a lot of that to do.

Earlier this year my wife and I went to a tractor safety course. The instructor said that since the introduction of ROPS there has been no reported deaths of anyone being rolled over by their tractor...caveat being that they had their seat belts on.

Welcome, I spent a lot of years dragging equipment back and forth through fields, pulling trailers etc., but had way more to learn than not when we got our first MFWD with FEL several years ago. I am still am not as good as I would like.

I really can't improve on or add to what the other members have told you here and on TBN, just take your time and your skill and comfort level will grow.

Thanks for the welcome...it will be "trial by fire" for awhile but, as long as I can stay safe and not damage my equipment, I'll be happy.

Staying safe shouldn't be a problem as you seem pretty safety conscious and you will be operating on relatively level ground. Keep your bucket as low as practical ROPS up and seat belt with plenty of ballast, I have fluid in my tires as well as wheel weights and 1100 pounds on the 3PH; very stable as we have hills, but even on flat ground proper ballast is important, just not quite as much. I also have rear tires set to maximum width.

If you are bush hogging or other work in woods or brush put expanded metal on your grill guard. Keep your screens clean, I use an air compressor and 2' nozzle with 90 degree holes to fit between radiator etc.

Get a good torque wrench, quality filter wrenches as the filters are a bear to remove, good grease gun, but you probably have these already.

Tractors by their nature are pretty tough, so tearing one up under normal isn't likely; enjoy.

Hey skeets...we used to live up in your area. I was stationed in Pittsburgh from '93-'96 and my kids went to North Hills. In fact, my son was on the same football team as LaVar Arrington (LaVar was a year older than my son and even then, he was a man amongst boys). We loved our time up in PA but don't know what I would have done for a living after retiring from the CG. In fact, I left Pittsburgh one year early for orders down to Houston...had never been to Houston and as fate would have it, looks like this will be where we live the rest of our lives. At any rate...great area that you live in!
