Good ‘enin, OTT. It’s time for an oil change on my G5200H. Looking it up, I see that these awesome machines were produced between 1984-1990. I know engine oils have changed dramatically as have the engine tolerances. My original owners manual says to use API service CC or CD, and below 59 degrees use 10w-30, and above 59 degrees use 30 or 10w-30. I tend to always use the owners manual fir my direction, but this sounds like hogwash, as Dad use to say!! TractorData has some totally different ideas. They say to use 10W-30 for 5degrees to 55degrees, and 30w from 55 degrees and up. Sooooooo…… I know these discussions tend to get dicey, but it is a rather ancient machine!!! What would y’all’s use if you had this awesome machine!!! Last oil change, the auto-parts guy suggested what they carry as pretty good snot, so I bought it-AllFleet 15w-40 and it seemed o.k. I thot y’all would have some better thots on this elixer subject. Thanks guys and gals. Take care. Semper-fi & This We’ll Defend, Mike

You cannot go wrong with Rotella T6 5w40. (Available at WallyMart)

This if FAR better motor oil than D600 needs. The crankcase holds so little oil (3.2 Qts) why not use the good stuff?

My G5200 even starts below 20F outside. (dont try this with heavier oil)

The manual is pretty clear and certainly not hogwash. SAE 10W30 for use at all temperatures has been the standard for most engines for many decades. The current API service class would be CK-4.

Good ‘enin, OldHokie. Not having had a diesel before, I thot that the 15w-40 was specifically made for diesel and the 10w-30 was for gas jobs. Thanks for the intel. Take care. Semper-fi & This We’ll Defend, Mike

The viscosity grades apply to both diesel and gasoline engines. The additive packages for diesel and gasoline oils are different and that is reflected in the API service class. As technolgy improves the service classes change.

1) Gasoline (spark ignition) oils are identified with a Sx service class. Current service class is SN

1) Diesel (compression ignition) oils are identified with a Cxx service class. Current service class is CK-4

Some formulations are suitable for both and will have both a Sx and Cxx specification on the label. Your garden tractor is a light duty diesel with no after treatment devices and more than happy with a dual rated oil.
