I'm a bit late to this thread, but as its only used in summer, I'll just toss it out there, the RPM's need to be fairly high with this machine when running the mower. It won't deal with the deck terrible well at low RPMs. (Anything below 3/4 throttle on mine will result in smoke and complaining...)

You didn't mention that you took the retaining pin out. (did you?) I like to start with the simple stuff first. B-) If you didn't notice it, (it might be covered over in dirt) its just a roll pin that holds it in. Knock that out, and it should slide right off.

Check and make sure your fuel pump is working, that unit has an electric unit under the seat area. (You should be able to see it under the fender, put a hand on it, and see if its vibrating when the key in on.

I have a 2005 RTV 900 and even after the fluid changes, the shifter still hangs up under pressure. (Like if you are on a hill, and want to switch to reverse, it won't let go.) I know the new units have a manual pressure release on them, is that something that I can add to my machine...

Before I bought the machine I have now, I used to use an old truck hood, behind my old ford. I flipped it, attached a chain, and used that to drag the stones.
