Hello All,
It's been a while since I have been here but now I need some expert help.
If you are ready; here we go.
I have an L245F tractor that is not putting out voltage to keep my battery charged. I put in a brand new alternator with internal voltage regulator.
It is the same as the one I took off. The system was charging up until this season it just quit charging the battery. First thing I did was buy a new Interstate battery because the old one would not even take a charge from a battery charger. After that I bought new alternator.
I am trying to figure out where the wires from the alternator should be routed to on the tractor.
On back of the alternator are 3 spade terminals marked E, F and N and it is these 3 wires that I don't know what to do with.
The old external regulator has been removed so the wires that once went to the regulator no longer do so since the regulator is gone. Regulator has been missing since I got the tractor 5 years ago.
The wiring on this old tractor has been cut and spliced and taped up and jury rigged to the point that it is impossible to figure anything out from a wiring diagram or by trying to follow a colored wire from it's origin to it's end. I mean a wire might start out as orange and by the time I find out where it terminates it is white and has been cut and spliced.
There are no lights on the tractor and no horn, no tach or anything electrical at all. So all I am trying to accomplish is getting the alternator to charge my battery. I did a regulator by-pass test by jumping a wire from the E spade terminal to the hot wire on the nutted stud and I got the proper voltage from the alternator with it running and like I said it is a new alternator so I know it is putting out juice. It was showing somewhere close to 14 or 15 volts when running with the jumper wire on. It only shows putting out 12.4 volts otherwise.
Where do I need to run new wiring to make this thing charge.
Thanks to all in advance for your help.

I'm a little confused. If this is the same alternator that is being replaced, why aren't the wires there from the old alternator connection? Also, if the regulator has been gone for years, what has provided the regulation needed for the alternator? It does not sound like this is a one wire alternator, since it has the three terminal plug on the output. I'd be tempted to get a one wire delco and have a go with that...

hi Bmodel7610,
Yes I am confused too. The wires are there but as I stated in my question there are so many cut, spliced , taped, melted wires on this thing that I cannot even trace the 3 wires in question. I just want to replace them.
I want to rip out all the old wires and replace with new.
As far as what has been providing the charging for the past years with no external regulator, it has to be the alternator internal regulator.
I just don't know where it gets it's power from to do the charging. It has to be within those 3 wires somewhere.
Thanks for looking.
