Reading another thread about these machines. I think old paint and another member. I have my Dads from 1980. 20 years ago the original Briggs 8 horse decided the rod wanted to be outside. Replaced with a Kohler Command 8 horse. Been tilling ever since. Last week I go to get the garden ready. After sitting outside for about a year(my bad) it started on the first pull. Two cans of fix a flat in one tire and it's still leaking. Got the garden tilled though. I replaced the axle seals a couple of years ago. Those new seals leaked worse than the old ones.
Anyway, this thing is still awesome. Troy Bilt is not the same

I have a Troy-Bilt Pony, about 25 years old. Power forward and reverse. Small Briggs on it, perhaps 3hp, plenty. The thing never has wanted to start. Always takes 20 pulls. I think it has an auto-decompressor, really not needed on a small engine and that makes firing it off more difficult. Leaks a tablespoon of gear oil a year, I suspect because vines or what ever get wrapped around the tine shaft and into the seals.
