I probably read, "To Build a Fire" about the same age. There's a lot of good teaching in that story, on a variety of topics.
I devoured Louis L'Amour, too. I really appreciate his attention to historical accuracy. If he described a certain spring at a certain location, it's there. You can go find it. Nobody is slinging an 1894 Winchester a decade after the Civil War in
