I keep my tractor 4 counties over and dont get out there much. I brought her in to do some maintenance since its pretty primitive out a the "farm". I do keep it under a lean-to, but...some sideways rain musta blew in and I left the bucket level with a chain in it no less. Needless to say, its rusted and flaked up pretty good and started corroding on the inside 8 inches or so on the bottom and top of the inside of the bucket bend.. Today, I hit it with wire brush, sand paper, and used a scraper and got all of the loose flakes up. What approach should I take before painting it? Does it need to be primed? I have a can of POR 15 I bought to use on my truck frame and might use it. I guess its ok at this point to spray it down with water to get all the rust dust out of it and then hit it with a leaf blower or compressed air to dry it out to get it good and clean to increase chances of paint sticking good. Interested in hearing from anyone that has done this. This pic is the after. It looked way worse before I started in on it.

I use this product on anything rusted after the loose stuff is removed. Put it in a qt. spray bottle and spritz it on. Let it set for a day or so and paint it if you choose. Metal will turn black when it's dry and has neutralized the rust.

+1 on the Ospho if your going to do something about the rust.

I just bought a gallon and I'm "experimenting" on my truck.

The "rust battle" is a losing one here in MI, but I keep at it to at least "prolong the inevitable".

Yep, rust in Michigan is a given. I've never used the Ospho but I would imagine it's pretty much the same as Permatex rust treatment. Goes on milky white and dries black and it's ready to paint. I did an old utility trailer with it and after painting it never rusted again.

I keep some phosphoric acid, (Ospho) in a spray bottle for stuff that sits around rusting. It will turn the rust black and leave a film. IF it gets wet before it dries it leaves a gooey white film but I can clean it off with mineral spirits.

Ospho is great. If it leave a gray powdery residue when it dries, brush or wash it off with mineral spirits before painting. Obviously with use of bucket, all the painting efforts are negated.

good to know about the Ospho. THats why I was wondering if I should use the POR 15 i bought for my old truck frame...its thicker than just painting it..is doing this a waste of time? just trying to give it some TLC for neglecting it like I did. :D

good to hear about the results. thanks. if it works in Michigan it has to work in the South..that is if the paint will ever dry from the humidity.

Acid etch and paint is a good plan. Past that, suggest when you park it, set a block or rock or something solid about the size of a brick under the back edge so when it settles it will be tilted forward at least slightly. May still get a light haze of rust on any areas bared by use, but won’t get the heavy, flaking, damaging rust that can come with water sitting in it for long periods of time.

are you using it on your truck frame?
Not yet.

The bottle claims that it needs to be painted after it sets up in order to work "correctly".

I'm not sure if it's worth the effort at this point. At some point the rust will win, so I have to be "somewhat practical" I suppose.

I'm currently just trying to make the body last a few more years.

I havent even read the can yet...will check that out.

"At some point the rust will win" - lots of wisdom there..It will get us, too, one day..so to speak.

Thanks for tips..Ill never let that happen again.....learning a lot as a first time tractor owner...some of it the the hard way, but also a lot from the site members.

I used the big box store equivalent, Rustoleum maybe?, on my riding mower deck and never got around to painting it. It's held up fine.
