Not sure how fast your bath is working, but you might want to flip your part more often than every 24 hrs to avoid getting a line where the water line is. My theory is from using a similar method to electrolytically sharpen fine wires by dipping them in and out of the air solution interface with the power on. Same for applying a silver chloride coating. You could see it working, bubbling right at the interface, more than deeper in the beaker. Could be an artifact of the shape of our parts, wire, but just in case.
Good point :D I did flip her. But in this case I don't think it's really critical. The parts are gonna be sanded before painting anyway. Figure a couple costs of primer, and sanding in between, you would probably never know it was there :D

Hit the fenders with rust oleum rust reformer. Stuff has to set for 24 hours. Then I can move on to primer :)

Got some dimples to fill and wet sand where the rust was real bad

Looks good Daren! I've never used the rust reformer, does it work well? Always had good results with their heavy rust primer, it's actually amazed me how well it bonds to straight rust.

This is my first time using the stuff, so I can't really answer your question :p it seems to bond fairly decently :D

Looks good, a great paint for rust is some stuff called POR15 (Paint Over Rust) it is an automotive rust inhibiting paint. We use it on our truck fleet up her in the northeast. It is about 60-100$ for a gallon but you will never have to use it again if you prep right and follow the instructions. One it is applied and dries properly you can literally hit it with a sledge hammer and nothing will chip off!

Just for clarity since there was some discussion on paint remover....... are you saying it Peeled off after coating with Dippity-do gel paint remover..... or peeled off after electronic tank dunk?

The electrolysis started to remove the paint ;)

Gotta tweak the process a little. It stalled out when the water cooled off.

Tweaked the tank by adding a stock tank heater to it. Once the water warmed up, it really started bubbling the paint :D Should have some more pics come morning :D

I have some spots being stubborn. But I'm gonna let it cook for another 24 hours and check it again.

Here's what I used for a heater. It actually heats the water to 180 degrees. So it could be the heat loosening the paint up. I didn't let it heat to 180. Just to bath water, and then unplugged it.

The heater is designed for a five gallon pail and has a shield to protect the plastic.

I used a stainless steel scotch pad, welding brush and scraper for the stubborn spots.

Daren, you better close up the garage and get ready for some nice weather. Coming right over you going to St. Louis. Their suppose to get 4-6" snow by tomorrow.

Hey, all I saw was a picture of a heater. Where's the clean hood?

Better order the new tires and put the wheels in the pot. The tractor is going to look so good it just won't be right with old tires and faded wheels. Maybe a new seat too and wasn't there a recent thread on a refurbished steering wheel. Just trying to help, but only from a distance.... a long distance:D:D:D

85Hokie, it's gonna be rattle canned with lobster red. Got the fenders primed. Gotta wet sand and hit them with a second coat. Hopefully, I'll have the hood cleaned and sanded in the next couple of days. Then I can hit that with the rust stuff and let it set for 24 hours.

Still looking for a match for the kubota blue paint for the frame.

Grouse Feathers, come on down. I can always use an extra hand :D:p not gonna redo the steering wheel. Rims are gonna get scuffed and hit with the red. Good ol armour all will shine up the tires :D

Darren,

I've never seen this I just copied the link for future reference when someone suggested it was a good match. You'll need to determine that first.
http://www.amazon.com/Rust-Oleum-Stops-Spray-Paint-12-Ounce/dp/B003ES43EO

But I can say that I used the Lobster Red on my bucket and it was a great match to the new Kubota wheels I purchased. Its what I'll use if I follow your example and repaint mine.

Regards,

Clay

How did you keep the process of electrolysis going on from attacking the bucket heater?

did you measure the rise in temperature? I have one of those and attempted to use it to warm bathtub water while my hot water heater was out. Came to the conclusion it would have taken 24hrs at least to get bath warm water.

Before my cabin was plumbed for water supply but plumbed for drains & also wired, I used to use 5 gallon buckets to fill the tub with water from the outside hydrant. (about 40F water temp) I would then drop in two of these quartz tube heaters & in about 4-5 hours, have a nice warm bath to relax in at the end of the day. I'm sure they (or something similar) would work for this purpose, (maybe too well) and no metal to complicate the process. I'm currently experimenting with this process, and it seems to be working well without heat, but if I change my mind, it will take a trip up north to recover them.
