I have a BX25D and am looking for a rotary tiller. It would not be for gardening but would be for breaking up sod in the side yard and wooded area. I want to till up the ground so I have a flat surface in these areas so I can cut grass on a fairly flat surface. I realize a bigger tractor with a heavy duty tiller would be ideal but I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the 1250 series and what they think about it. From most I've talked to they say stay with the front rotation and don't go with the reverse rotation as that is more for cultivating garden type soil and if there's roots or rocks, it'll grab and cause problems. Is the 50" wide one too wide for the tractor for what I want to do? Thanks for any input.

If you just want a flat surface, can you do it with a grading scraper, box blade, with the FEL, or any other implement you already have? Sounds like a one time task, so might not be worth buying a tiller for.

I did rent a tiller for my BX one time, and whilst it rattled and banged away it worked fine. And since it was a rental I didn't worry too much about the stones it was throwing up.
