Rock bucket on Craigslist

I don't know a whole lot about rock buckets but they seem simple enough and it's definitely an implement I could put to good use. I found one on Craigslist with about 2 hours on it that's built for a skid steer so it should fit the MX without any trouble. Not sure how wide it is but it looks like it's 72" or similar and it's a decent price.

Double check the weight of the bucket as some of the ones I have seen are very heavy. You have long arms on your loader and you will put some stress on the hydraulics as you bounce the thing to get rid of the dirt.

The owner says it's 72" wide, 28" deep, 2-1/2" between the tines and he estimates that it weighs about 500 lb. It's made by Ranette Ironworks in ID so I called them this morning and they told me that the bucket would cost about $1,800 new. That should be fine for the MX loader arms right? Here's a photo of the actual rock bucket.

The book says 1691 pounds for your loader with the breakout force of 3000+ so I would say you are good. With that on the FEL you could pick up the rock and "bounce it" as you mow.

The book says 1691 pounds for your loader with the breakout force of 3000+ so I would say you are good. With that on the FEL you could pick up the rock and "bounce it" as you mow.

Thanks. I have a huge mound of dirt and rocks to sort through that I'm using as back fill, as well as removing rocks from the field when mowing. I also need to remove and sort rocks from a couple of areas that I'm currently digging out. Like I mentioned, I could really put that rock bucket to good use.

That's always a possibility, but since I spoke with the owner twice today and committed to paying for and picking it up tomorrow I doubt that he'll sell it to someone else.

I get washout from a small cement co. After each delivery they washout the trucks. Larger plants recrush and remix this stuff. Just ask trucking co for 3' & under chunks. Gives me large fill and small fill.

I picked up the rock bucket this afternoon and am very pleased with it. The bucket is 73" wide, has the standard 45" wide skid steer mounting plates, the tines are 3/8" thick and I paid $1,300 for it which I think is a great price for such a well made and heavy duty rock bucket. The manufacturer quoted me $1,800 for a new equivalent bucket.

I was thinking, it would make a nice mobile barbecue grill for some big steaks and such.

I'm heading to AZ for the week on Sunday for work but will do that when I get back. I have a huge pile of dirt that I want to "sift" so that I can use it to back fill (support) the outer edges of the 9,000 sq.ft. of asphalt that was put down almost 2 years ago.

I'm sure there's a technique to shaking the bucket once it's full to get the smaller stuff to fall through. I'll figure it out.

By the way, I almost ran out of fuel on the way back. It was a gorgeous 150 mile round trip to pick up the bucket in Libby and I was a mile from home when the truck started to act weird like it was surging or bucking. Luckily I was able to make a quick diversion to a local gas station to get diesel but the truck ran really rough for 20 seconds when I restarted it. Close call there!

Nice bucket, you will have no issue using that with your MX. I have a Titan model that is a little heavier at about 770lbs that I sometimes use on my MX. When I mount it on my track loader it is one of my favorite tools for leveling ground and clearing roots. Good luck with your sifting.

I got the bucket off the trailer and onto the tractor this evening and spent some time with the pressure washer cleaning them both up. I did spend a few minutes trying it out and it's going to be a very useful tool, no doubt about it. It does a great job of pulling the rocks out of the area that I'm digging out, and it also pulled some big rocks out of the dirt pile that is shown behind the MX.

In the spirit of full disclosure there's something weird with the bucket. When I got the bucket in the air for cleaning I noticed that it's been modified. I'm not sure if it was hacked up by the manufacturer or the previous owner who claims only 2 hours of use. The bucket fits the loader just fine but clearly some steel has been removed or moved. My initial thought is that the box tubing was originally level with the bottom of the bucket but it was cut and moved up, possibly to fix the issue of the cams not engaging properly or the angle of the plates being off. Also, there's no paint on the inside of the two plates at either end which is also odd. I'll take a closer look when I get back from my trip and will definitely break out a grinder and welder to make it a lot cleaner and possibly add in some steel. I'm not bothered by what I found but am interested in the why.

It definitely looks modified after the factory paint. It looks like they added 2x2" angle iron as a spacer, to add more roll back. Should help it hold more rocks.
I believe the back of most buckets lay forward roughly 10-15 degrees. Yours looks square, so you'd lose 10-15 worth of rollback.

It still looks like a good deal.

The bucket back is square to the tine floor so maybe it was modified for the reason that you mention i.e. to allow for more roll back. I sent an email and photos to the manufacturer asking if they modified it, and if so, why.

Yes, at $1,300 it's still a good deal and after I make a couple of small improvements aimed at fixing any cosmetic issues it'll look like it was made that way. Not a big deal.

Ranette Industries replied to my email yesterday within a few hours or my asking them about the bucket. I'm impressed by their willingness to provide information and the timely manner in which they responded. That says a lot about the company.

Here's my email to them .....

"I purchased one of your rock buckets recently from an individual who claimed to have ordered it from you directly. He stated that he only used it for 2 hours on a Skid steer. It’s in good condition and I got it for a fair price so I’m happy with it, but when I got it on the tractor to clean it up I noticed that it’s been modified. Did you modify it, and if so, why? I’m interested as to what was cut off and/or moved. The two plates at either end appear to be unpainted on the inside too which is weird."

... and their response.

"That was modified by us yes, it was custom built for the original customer but his skidsteer didn’t have enough up tilt so we had to modify the mounts for him.

Thats impressive that they got back to you so quickly. Their response should help put your mind at ease. Its too bad they didn't touch up the bare metal though, even a rattle can job.
