Has anyone had success collecting grass with out the PTO blower? I'm in the process of fitting an old craftsman bagger that I had to my G5200. I picked up a agrifab universal deck boot and cut it to fit, was able to mount the bagger to the rear, and I'm just waiting on a tube to connect the two.

Anyone do this before?

Had one of those on a Craftman 18 HP years ago.

Lots of frustration.

You need to get blades designed to work with bagger. They have to provide all the driving force to move the grass through the hose.

Very dry grass only.

I was always envious of those who had a fan driven from the mower deck's outer blade spindle for their bagger. Worked much better than mine.

Newer decks designed to work with bagger are more open on the top so grass does not have to make a 90 degree turn. Look at some mowers. The blade's discharge is aimed at the hose. When you lift the discharge guard while sitting in the seat you can see part of the blade. Older decks you cannot see the blade unless you are looking in sideways.

FYI

Kubota made a bagger system for the early G’s. GC48G. I’ve successfully installed this on my G5200 and it works great!

Little bit of an update to this. The bagger I've been using for the last couple of years is a GC60G. Only complaint is that the top of the gear box hits the bottom of the footwell/fiberglass when its raised all the way up. (i like to cut at the absolute highest setting)

I recently picked up another bagger system GCK60-24B for, what I thought was going to be my B7500. Turns out that this system, besides the rear frame mount, works on the G series tractors as well. Its a little bit of a different mount on the deck, but it works. I believe the part numbers are the same, but the blowers are visibly different.

Looks like you went down the road I did when it comes to adapting a bagger to our older G series tractors. I ended up finding a newer RC48G-20S mower deck and a GC48G grass catcher locally at a great price. I got both in excellent condition for only $700. I attached a few pictures showing what I had to do to get it to work with mine and what it looks like now. I also had to trim a little bit of the right floorboard in order for the blower gearbox to clear with the deck at full height. I fabricated my own bracket that mounts to the rear end and in turn the bagger mount attaches to that.

I was so psyched to be able to get all this to work. I originally was going to try and adapt a craftsman bagger setup. Glad I didn't go down that road!
