Cpl questions for anyone that has a minute... first time tractor/cutter owner..bought this old M&W PC515 cutter..got new blades put on, greased the PTO, now just need to tackle this grease residue issue. I took the plug out but didn't see a seal of any kind, should there be one behind the plug head? is this why its oily there?

I keep my rig a couple of counties over and brought it in to tackle every issue I can think of because its hard to work on it where I keep it, very remote

Also, on the top of the gearbox..I thought that was going to wind up being a breather of some kind, but down in the hole..at the bottom is just more of the maroon/painted gear housing..theres nothing to do there. Thanks for any direction.

The thing on top is probably a plug of some sort so you can fill the gear box with lubricant. The plug on the side is the fill level plug so stop filling when lubricant starts to come out of that hole.

To me they both look similar and appear to be a threaded port with a sealing washer under the plug shoulder. Search “SAE port chart” for examples if you don’t understand what I mean.

Hey Russel, thanks for reply.. ON the top it's just the appearance of something but, not sure if you can tell from pic, theres it bottoms out to just metal gearbox housing. Theres no screw or bolt head of any kind. Just has those rings at the top that make it look like something. Weird.

Any idea on how to stop the seepage from fill plug? thanks

Suggestion: Take the plug out. Clean the threads thoroughly on both the plug and gearbox (brake cleaner clean). Apply a small amount of oil resistant RTV gasket maker evenly distributed on the plug threads. Reinstall the plug and leave it be for several hours.

on it. Thanks a mill for details, too (brake cleaner clean and the link to the gasket maker). I feel good about it.
