I inherited my dad's place and need to move the 500 gallon butane tank out of the way, which is no longer needed., He went all electric years before he passed. I have L3000 with regular FEL. I assuming a couple of straps will be used. I don't have hooks on my bucket, not sure if I am going to need them. What about some bolt on forks to hang the straps off of? im just brainstorming here..any ideas would be appreciated.

ASSUMING that it's propane and empty. It'll still weigh around 950#.

Without the benefit of forks and hooks, I'd try getting two chains around it (under it with both ends of the chain up). Then I'd drive up to it with the bucket at full dump. Toss the chains up over over the top of the bucket and around it. Then grab the bucket cutting edge with all four hooks. Hopefully you have an assortment of chains so they're not going to suspend the tank like a kid's swing. You want to keep it from swinging around. Raise / curl the bucket so the chains tighten themselves around the tank. Pick it and go carefully. Pay attention to any fittings or valves. If you break anything off of the tank, run away like Rosie is trying to kiss you.

ha at run like Rosie is trying.... thanks for the descriptive reply..i read it several times and feel like i see exactly what you are saying to do. If Im following...once I have rigged this up right, the tank will be snug up against the bottom of the bucket to keep it from swingin, correct. This is probably the only tank in the county that doesnt have loops welded to each end.

Note to self: make sure tank is empty before attempting to move it.

Saw a YouTube video where a guy dug out, then removed a 500 gallon tank out of the ground with his BX23S, and then used some old 4x4's to create a sort of track/sled and pushed it over/on top of the 4x4's so it didn't tear up the lawn. As he pushed it there were two other guys who would move the wood from the back to the front of the tank, creating a track for the tank to glide on to get it out of the yard.

Your local propane supplier may haul it away for you, for some cost.

Yes, and using the curl/dump you can regulate how tight the chains get. I'd think you don't want to curl the bucket to the point you add more load to the chains than needed.

We had one at work, everyone forgot about it except me (the old timer)... they were turning the wooded area into a parking lot and I asked what you going to do with the 500 gallon tank... after a brief "WTF you talking" moment. We located the company, who had written it off to a Tornado.

We didn't ask any questions (kind of got a chuckle out of it), we had to cut the brush away from it (couldn't see the darn thing) they emptied it and hauled it away...

Propane tanks …the one shaped like hot dogs…. have LOOPS at each end for picking it up.

All you have to do , is run a chain (or the hook at the end of the chain) thru the Loop…. then run the chain around the pins where the bucket connects to the FEL quick-attach…then the other end of the chain to the opposite Loop. Should be simple.

But, for the future, buy a couple “grab hooks“ from the counter at your Kubota or other tractor dealer…and weld them onto the top lip of your bucket in alignment with the FEL arms. YOu’ll be SO GLAD you did every time you use them…which will be far more than you realize.

Depending on the lift capacity of his FEL....he may need to 'curl' the bucket to lift the tank.

My tractor's FEL would just barely lift my 320 gallon tank using the boom function and I had to 'curl' the bucket to get the rest.
