Bought a used m96s 4x4 cab tractor and when I engage the 4x4 the indicator light on the dash lights up that it's engaged but the front drive shaft will not turn. Nothing feels loose or stripped out. Any suggestions on where to start looking?

How do you know? The front propeller shaft is totally enclosed in a protective tube?
Easiest way to tell is loft the front end a bit with the loader and get out and turn the front wheels. If one turns right an d the other left, it should be working (put the unit in 2wd first, then in 4wd and try turning them again. The should not turn (tractor off of course.).
