Hope this not too dumb of a question but to check the gear box oil on the bush hog do you have to unscrew the top plug? The book says it's a vented plug. Looks like the top should pull out like a dip stick.

Thanks for helping a rookie. Just hit 25 hours and having a blast with it.

Which LP Bush Hog do you have?

On mine, RCR 1860, you unscrew the dip stick at the top to check it. The manual sys to screw it back in and then unscrew it again to check the level.

You can always take out the side screw to check the oil level if you can't check it any other way.

I don't have a Land Pride cutter, I own two other brands but both gear boxes are checked the same way. There should be a smaller screw plug about midway of the gear box. Take that screw plug out and if oil drains out, you are good. Never fill the gear box all the way to the top screw plug on top of the gear box. That top screw plug is used to add oil.

I have the 1860. It looks like the top of the plug should pull out to check the level, but it wont budge. tried pliers a little, but don't want to bugger it up. So i guess I will unscrew the whole plug. I can check the level with the plug on the side, was just hoping for a little more convenience.

The top plug is a mushroom vented plug, it's shaped that way to keep out dirt and water. The gearbox must be vented to let pressure equalize as it heats or cools. Like Ridger said, never fill the gearbox all the way, as you use it and it heats up, you will have oil overflow at the least or more likely blow out the seals.
