The L345 steering box is part #35350-16160
The L285 steering box is part #34260-16100 and it only fits the L285.
There is a forum member who has some used parts for the L series. From memory 007kubotaguy.

The reason I am bumping this old thread is because it’s where my searching led me when I got an L285 and the steering box broke. like everyone else googled it and found this forum.
Attached is a picture of a new steering unit made by kumar bros. Found on ebay. The l345dt steering fits my l285. spent a few days reading posts like the above and hope this helps anyone searching for a new box.
minor clearance work with the angle grinder-figure out new pitman arm, and it’s a bolt in.
There is a YouTube video out there guy swapped an ebay l345dt steering box in his 295 so, figured it’d work on the 285.
Part numbers may not interchange, but ingenuity is the name of the game for vintage repairs is it not?

I am repairing my L285 Steering section and I have a question, I can turn to the right fine but when I turn to the left the whole steering shaft comes out and I have no control on the steering. Is there something that keeps the shaft from coming out of the column. I have pulled the steering box and other than some wear on the teeth of the steering gear everything is pretty much intact. I am wondering if I can just replace the steering shaft and then use the adjustment screw on the right side of the steering box to mate the gears better. This is a 1978 model and I know everyone talks about the water intrusion but this one has always been kept in the shed. When i disassembed the steering box it was full of oil and very little rust or water in the oil. I am hoping i can just replace the steering shaft.
