I just split my l2800 and installed a new 4wd gear and Main gear on the spiral bevel shaft. I applied the gears in the correct sequence. I then put all three shafts in place and installed the intermediate housing but the spiral bevel gear is rather hard to rotate and the countershaft/PTO also feels rough and I have to spin it with a wrench. I applied the shims that were in place when I disassembled the tractor. Any suggestions on what I can do to free the assembly??Or is this a normal condition??

Any assembly that requires shims as part of the build process, has very specific tolerances. Sounds like ya better get a hold of the shop service book, and see what those spec's are.

Thanks Milo. I found the problem. The part number for the stock main gear had been discontinued and Kubota had assigned a new number to the part. The new main gear was packaged with a 4wd gear, but the dealer sold me the OEM 4wd gear also. I installed what I thought was the compatible 4wd gear, however neither of us knew that Kubota had changed the thickness and diameter of the new gear set. I found out the hard way and had to remove all of the shafts and apply the mate gear that was packaged with the main gear. Beware of this if you have to make the repair because the computer does not note the gear change much less that they are sold as a set. Are you confused yet???? I was.
