I cannot get the tractor to go into gear (grinding) if the transfer case is either in high or low. If the transfer case is in neutral I can shift into any gear I want, but as soon as I put it in gear and then try and shift the transfer case nothing but grinding again. Do you think I need a new clutch? What is a rough estimate on a clutch job?

First try adjusting the clutch. See attached page from the WSM

Out of curiosity, is there freeplay in the clutch pedal or is it at the very top of the travel?

If you have freeplay, I'd say the clutch is toast. If not, it needs adjusted.

there is no free play in the clutch. When I did remove the pin and disconnected the pedal I could move the lever in and out of the transmission housing a little. If I push it tight to the housing the lever doesn't move at all. Bearing maybe?

You need to have free play in the clutch pedal.

No free play means the clutch is not releasing and thus the problem getting into gear.

Any test by hand is meaningless as the pressure plate springs are very strong.

The pedal linkage provides a lot of leverage and at the clutch pressure plate the necessary movement is small to effect the release.

Just a follow up question because I may have my mind on backwards...

I thought free play was there to ensure that the clutch was fully engaged. Seems like lack of free play would risk the clutch not being fully engaged and perhaps slipping.

So I am wondering how increasing/adjusting pedal free play would make disengaging the clutch more likely to happen. Seems like the OP needs his clutch to disengage and that misadjustment that eliminated free play would not cause his problem.

I had a similar problem with my 4030 a couple months back. did some searching on the web and found other folks have the same issue. One quick way to determine if it is actually the clutch is to crank it in gear (make sure your headed in a clear zone!) If the tractor moves it's probably not the clutch. It could be the clutch plate is stuck on the output shaft. An unorthodox l way to get it loose is to have an implement on the 3ph and back into a tree or other immovable object to shake it free. I did this and it worked! Not the most orthodox way to fix something but....it worked and has been working ever since.....google it for yourself though...
