Getting ready to do the preseason maintenance on my tractor, and decided I am through fighting the old cobbled together battery box the previous owner attempted to make. The one that is sort of on it:rolleyes: is so small that a tiny battery barely fits, plus it has broken loose at one corner; this occasionally creates great excitement when crossing a ditch and the positve terminal grounds against the hood:eek:.

At over $100.00 for a new one, I am sure I can weld a suitable replacement as long as I have some idea of the size needed.

My second idea is to buy a cheap marine battery box and just make a platform to bolt it down.

Thanks,

Robert

Mine still has the stock tray, I'll measure it for you when I get home tonight. I'll be interested to see what you come up with. Mine has a big old rust hole in the bottom so I've got to patch or replace.

The marine box isn't a bad idea either.

If you can't find something on this website to mount a battery down then you are just too picky (or frugal)!

Stumpy - from looking at some of the pictures there are some that would bolt onto the existing rusted out pan you have.

I am also thinking about mounting some remote jumper/charging terminals so you don't have to open the hood at all to use the battery.

See this thread for information on that:

Thanks Russell. The hole in the stock piece isn't huge (it's behind something in both pics), I'd like to patch it if I can but good to know I've got lots of options.

Here you go Robert, hope it helps. If you want the hole locations too let me know.

Battery Tray Drawing
It's around a 1\2" deep and the front lip is angled a bit forward. All dimensions are from the inside.

Matt,

Thanks. The pictures and your drawing are sufficient. Now it looks to me like he welded 3/4" angle iron on the front corners of the stock battery tray, high enough to really be a PITA to do anything with the battery.

Whatever, it is coming out and a reasonably servicable unit will be fabricated.

Russel,

What you want are readily available on military combat vehicles, we always called them "slave terminals" basically a two conductor terminal with a screw on cover for jump starting without raising the hood. I haven't looked, but imagine they are available from surplus dealers. The sticking point might be the slave cable; no idea how expensive it would be to buy one and fit one end with clamps.

Thanks for the help,

Robert
