My poor old L1500DT just loves getting a bit of attention ;-)
Just about everythng in the steering is worn out!

In the steering box I've already replaced the shaft bearings (x2):

And replaced the 60-odd little ball bearings and guides in the shaft. (What a fiddly job that is!)

And then I adjusted the adjustment screw on the steering box to get the best (least) play.
Then I found that the drag-rod ends are shot - (that ties the steering from the left-hand wheel to the right-hand wheel.). There was so much free play there that you could move one wheel a good 15-20° independelty from the other! So I've reaplced them too.

But there's still a good 90° of free play in the steering wheel before even the slightest hint of movment in the links.
So I reckon the steering box is just too far worn to do anything more with.

I've found that the shaft with gear is available and some places have the complete steering box available. However I'm not sure if they are any good, or what the qaulity would be like? That box is expensive if it's just a painted-up old worn-out unit!

Has anyone had any experience with the qaulity of replacement steering boxes?
