Hello! I found this forum today, and wonder if anyone can look up from the beautiful orange bonnet, and help me figure out something.

I live in S.E. Norway and have a Kubota M7040 from autumn 2010. It has not been used a lot, mainly professional snow-shovelling, and has almost passed 1.000 working hours.

Some months ago I discovered oil spread around near the front and top of the engine, some on both sides. Some points got quite black, it is not evenly distributed around. I have had it twice on a professional workshop, but not yet managed to find the source(s) of the leak.

A year or two ago I had to change an oil-cooler in front of the fan, because it was leaking oil that spread around the engine with the fan. I also had to change the alternator because of this, so it got quite expensive. But this seems to work allright now, this looks like something else.
I think it is hydraulic oil, but am not sure.

What I think I've figured out so far, is that most of the time there's no leak. Leaking appears only if I drive the tractor for quite some time on full/high engine speed. This is usually only during transporting tasks along good roads. The rpm's go up to about 2700. I've tried to reduce to 2500 the last months, and have not seen the leak. But I'm afraid that the leak could get worse after some time, and will therefore try to find out why it is leaking, hopefully before next winter.

Has anyone any idea of some typical Kubota issues like this, oil leaks that only appears after full engine speed for some time?

Until solutions appear, I will keep driving carefully, and wash the engine and alternator if needed.

Regards, Helge

This sounds like the perfect task for ultraviolet leak detection.

There are inexpensive kits and very expensive kits available.

The kit comes with a variety of dyes which you add to hydraulic systems such as power steering, engine oil, coolant, air conditioning. Different dyes to go into different systems. In your case you would just add it to the hydraulic oil if that is what you think is leaking. If you dont find any hydraulic oil leaks suspect the engine oil and there would be a different dye for engine oil.

The kit contains a simple flashlight which produces UV light which excites the dye causing it to glow. Kits also include cheap glasses to enhance your viewing of the dye.

In your case you would clean up the present messy area and then add the dye to the hydraulic oil. The dye pack is small.

Drive for a little while and then get out and shine the UV light around looking for a glowing area. This will be where the hydraulic oil is leaving the engine.

Search for UV leak detection on youtube and you will see examples of these kits being used. They first started for AC systems where what is leaking is a gas and hence impossible to see but now they are used for everything.
