Hello,
Been lurking awhile, but now need some help. I have a GF1800 2wd and its been great for the last 10 years. Last year I was mowing some ruff and hit a couple of roots really hard and I think damaged the one way bearing. Anyway it failed this year.

I had a spare PTO assemble (serial #10151) with a busted case so I swapped the one way clutch assembly and replaced the orings etc in the clutch. I also used the brake disk from the 10151 serial # to my operational 31019 serial#.

The symptoms where PTO wouldn't engage but deck would lift. So I first thought o-rings in clutch after reading North Idaho Wolfmans advise on another thread. When that didn't work I found the one-way(item70) bearing cracked.

So after taking it apart and putting it back together and waiting on parts etc I thought it was fixed.

After 3 hours of flawless operation I remembered I forgot to install the thrust bearing (item130)......ouch!!!! After taking it apart and back together so many time I got in a hurry. When I opened it up a found a few metal shaving so drained the fluid, replaced filter and cleaned screen. Also washed all the bearings etc in PTO assembly.

One thing I found was the brake-plate(item180) mounting holes were wallowed out and nuts loose (where item 90 studs go through brake-plate). I put lock-tight on the nuts but probably didn't allow it to set prior to immersing in hydro fluid.

Couple of questions:
1. Are the brake disk compatible(item 180). Messick shows a serial break but part numbers are the same. Currently have one on order but just called in a part number.

2. Does my theory sound good about the reason for the Brake-Plate being wallowed out...nut working themselves loose.

Couple of tips-take the breather tube off the top and look inside PTO with it running. Should see the clutch move back and forth with the PTO lever. It should also spin if its not spinning I would be thinking one-way bearing.

Thanks for reading the entire thread a for any help.

Nuts not tightened?
Eserv, Thanks for the reply.
I guess, Manual says 8.7 ft-lb and apply three bond 1324. Gonna try it again. Funny thing my spare mower the plate was the same. May not have allowed locktight enough time to cure.

Why 8.7 foot -pounds? Why dont they figure it to inch lbs? Unusual to see foot pounds with a fraction or a decimal. Like 105 inch lbs, makes for accurate torque. Redonkulous. Just my .02cents.
Threadlocker needs a cure time, like any adhesive.
