Quoting from page 87 in my M7040 operators manual:
close the fuel cock,unscrew retainer ring,remove cap,rinse inside with K1,take out the element & dip in K1,reassemble,bleed the fuel system(see "bleeding fuel system" in "SERVICE AS REQUIRED" in "periodic service" section.
After cleaning cup I leave nut slightly loose ,crank engine,when cup fills with diesel,tighten nut.
