Let's see if you can spot the problem with the directions on this Fill-rite 1204H 12vdc wiring instructions:

Is that little bit of "black" supposed to be the black wire as shown in the diagram?

Here is what the Fill-rite Owner's Manual says about wiring for the 12vdc model (emphasis added):

DC Wring Instructions:

1. Remove pump’s electrical junction box cover and straighten the red and black wire.
2. Screw the furnished cable connector into 1/2" NPT conduit opening on the junction box.
3. Strip 3" of the outer covering from one end of the furnished electrical supply cable.* Be careful not to damage the black and red wire insulation.
4. Loosen cable connector nut and pass the stripped end of the furnished cable through the cable connector. Tighten the cable connector nut.
5. Strip 1/2" of the insulation from the ends of the red and black cable wires. Using the furnished wire nuts, connect the cable wires to the pump wires
matching the colors.
IMPORTANT: Be sure no bare wire is exposed.
6. Fold wires into junction box and replace, making sure the cover gasket is in place. Make sure all screws are seated so there is no space between the
frame and the junction box (see Step 6 diagram on Page 6).
*12 AWG cable not supplied with pump only models

I've e-mailed Fill-rite with no response as yet.

Thanks for any help!

Looks like someone got carried away with the red paint when painting the pump and didn't apply any masking to the black wire. Scrape a bit of the outside of the wire, the one with the black showing and see if the insulation is black underneath. Sure looks like it is based on your photos.

After writing this out, I think you're exactly right. Note that the first instruction is to remove the junction box to get to the wires. These wires were both exposed and out when I unboxed the pump.

I'll take off the box tomorrow and confirm.

Thanks!

I think those two wires should not be sticking out of the connector that you will be putting the cord through.

I have wired a ton of those pumps over the years and those wires shouldn't be sticking out of that connector. They get spliced to the cord you will have to supply in the junction box. For some reason someone at the factory pulled those wires out and got a little crazy with the red paint. Some folks like the CPI pumps I have been around fillrite since I was a kid. We sold pickup tanks and pumps at my folks truck stop, filling station when I was a kid. The first 100 gallon pickup tanks were split 50/50 and had hand pumps. Back then guys still had gas and diesel tractors on the farm. It was a big deal when electric pumps came around.

Yep. The wires on my Fill-rite 120 vac pump were well tucked in the junction box when I received it.

Got a reply from Fill-rite (paraphrasing): "Overspray. Remove the junction box and the black wire should be obvious - like the instructions say to do [dumbass]."

The DA was obviously not stated, but it was heavily implied. And of course he was exactly right. I received the 12 ga wire and 30 amp fuse holder; I should have it installed today.

Thanks for the help.
