Hi guys,

I have a B2601 and I'm looking to move some square bales that weigh around 750 lbs. There is a local fabricator that makes a SSQA bales spear that weighs about 200 lbs. My question is, the loader capacity is calculated with a bucket attached, so assuming the bucket weighs 400lb does that mean I would gain 200lb of lift capacity?

Thanks,
Glenn

I'd say your lift will be about the same-bucket is more likely less than 200lbs and not anywhere near 400lbs.

But-the weight of the bale will be very far forewords so I don't think you'd be able to lift it (safely) anyway. Make sure you have PLENTY of rear ballast if you try though.

The issue as I see it is the size of the bales and the height above the ground you are going to be driving with this weight out front.

Just because you manage to pick something up does not mean you can transport it safely. You are getting close to having 50% of the tractor weight on the spear!

The front axle pivots so does nothing to stabilize your tractor from rolling over sideways. You are completely dependent upon the rear axle for stability in a roll over situation.

Braking. Unless you operate in 4WD, your braking ability will be seriously compromised as so little weight will be on the rear wheels. A slight slope and you may not be able to stop.

I think you are asking too much of a B2601's FEL

If you were going to be carrying the bales on the 3 pt hitch that would be a completely different story which is well within the capability of your tractor.
