I used to always leave the brush hog hanging off the back end of my L3400 HST as ballast when doing any FEL work. But lately I've had trouble maneuvering in tight spots and decided to make my own ballast "box". Got a used 30 gallon barrel, cut off the top, stuck a drawbar through it and filled it with concrete plus a bunch of old brake rotors. Weighed everything first so I didn't exceed my recommended 3-pt lift limit of 770 lbs, ended up with a little over 700 lbs in a nicely compact form.

Adds a lot of stability - even with liquid ballast in rear tires I'd get uncomfortably light in the back when picking up a full bucket of gravel. And it's so much easier to maneuver, I should have done this years ago.

Nice and tight. I use a carry-all with an IBC tote on it filled with liquid, but yours is a lot more compact.

Mine had the advantage of being very easy and basically free, since I had the carryall and the tote, but if I were going to build a ballast, I think I'd copy yours. (y)(y)
