After hitting the differential pedal by mistake, I felt something come back through the pedal. Upon inspection, we found it was not in lock position, but if you push the pedal down it will not come back up and will not lock into differential lock. The return spring is still on the pedal. I can manually push rod backwards to engage and frontwards to disengage. If I unhook the rod from the pedal, I still have to engage manually. The pedal is weak and will not return up on its own.

You description does not sound unusual.
In a similar vein, if you search the forum you will find Owners who cannot get their tractor to come out of 4x4.

Diff lock is a similar problem

For 4x4 binding advice usually is, if you have a loader, to lift the front wheels off the ground thus relaesing any binding action in the front to rear drivetrain.

With Diff lock not releasing sometimes backing up and turning will allow the lock to release.

If all else fails, jack up one back wheel.

There is no "lock" on the pedal. You push it down to engage it, when you need it. Then it should pop out when you let off the petal.

It locks the two rear wheels to get you unstuck. You can not turn the tractor without binding and stressing the transmission. It is for temporary use only!! (doesn't lock them together except for when you are pushing down on the petal)

I could not exactly follow the wording in your post - sorry if I got it wrong...

When you push down on pedal it doesn’t engage differential but you can manually take your hand and push rod to lock differential but when you remove foot off of pedal it doesn’t come back up the spring is on pedal return you can pull it back up with hand it stays in locking position and you can manually push rod forward and and it unlocks differential i removed rod from pedal and push pedal down and it still doesn’t come back up
