Last fall, I put the tractor to bed and it was running great. This spring, I could not get it started.
After using the glow plugs, I turned the key to the right and the red light gets quite a bit dimmer. I can hear the fuel pump loud and clear, but the starter will not catch, even though I had it rebuilt recently. How can I tell what the problem is?

Is it the starter switch? The fuse looks OK. Ironically, I tried to jump the starter with cables to the battery and got nothing. Weird or what?

Did I have some mice that could have eaten the insulation off the starter switch wire? Is it causing some kind of short?

Nice tractor, but a dud when it won't start, durn thing.

Rule out the dumb things like a pto switched on. Some people do this to slow down casual thieves. Other safety switches can also block the starter circuit.

Next to rule out are the battery and the battery cable connections. The ground cable connection to the engine or frame should be removed and cleaned as well as those on top of the battery.
Not certain where you live but taking the battery to get tested would be a wise step.

You say you you boosted the battery with no change. You also say the starter was rebuilt. Has a wire fallen off the starter solenoid?

Applying power directly to the starter solenoid is a good test but only if you know what you are doing and dont start the machine in gear and drive through the back wall of your garage or worse run yourself over.
Buying a 12 volt test light like this one on Amazon.com for around $10 is worthwhile.

With it you can touch the tip of the light to the starter solenoid having grounded the alligator clip on the battery negative terminal.Turn the key to the start position and the light should come on.

If you do the tests suggested and if still in trouble post a wiring diagram more suggestions are possible.
