I've been working on hydraulic hose replacement on this BT600 backhoe. I had posted a question about the protective cloth but now have another question so I decided to do a new post with pictures.

The cylinder pin hook up closest to the tractor has two possible attachment holes for the pin. I am wondering why the second hole is not used as it would give more room for the hoses and the protective cloth. I had called Messick's earlier but they did not know and suggested I try it. Before doing so, I figured I'd go to the "experts" to get a little more info!

Here is a picture of the two attachment holes. The one with the cylinder attached is the way it came to me. It seems as though the lower hole would be easier on the hoses. The second picture attempts to show the additional space for the hoses. At this moment of the picture, the cloth is pulled up so that I can find the leak so the hoses are "bare."

Using the other hole will change the "lever arm" of the boom. In other words, you might be able to dig a few inches deeper but not lift as much weight.

My LA 1154 loader has 2 cylinder mounting positions. One gives about 11" more lift and the other gives me about 10% more lift capacity.

Interesting...makes sense. I think I would like to have less pressure on those hoses since the difference in lift or weight capacity would not make too much difference in what I am currently doing. Maybe the hoses will last longer! Thanks for the info, mcfarmall! You definitely get an "A" for the day.

Once again, I've learned the best way...by doing. Doing it wrong is not the plan, but often, that's the way it works for me.

The additional hole on a BT600 is not for adjusting the lift or weight capability. It is used for the pin to keep the boom from drifting down when the tractor is parked.

I went through the whole shamoley today, removing the hoses at the controls, removing both pins for the cylinder inside the boom, etc., changing the location of the cylinder hookup, etc., only to find out that it's not going to work. Thought I'd post the result here in case someone else followed along with my faulty thinking. I should've realized it and, quite frankly, the Messick's service support should've known. I give them a break because there are so many implements and tractors that it would be really difficult to stay on top of everything. The BT600 is an older backhoe so perhaps not many people need help with the older ones. But, I surely did learn how this thing works! I feel good. :)
