Hello,
I this winter I had a grenade go off inside the transmission of my B7510 (blew up running a snowblower, shear pin went, but still managed to treat the trans like a shear pin…) , and it was a huge job to repair. I had to replace the bearing holder P/N 6C05012110, and the hi/lo PTO speed shaft (2nd shaft, 13T-18T) P/N 6C09014210. I also changed all the bearings in the transmission at this time, including those in the mid PTO. There was a lot of carnage, even made a bit of a mess of the trans case there the bearing that holds the 2nd shaft blew apart. I had to dial and machine the case, sweated in a stainless sleeve and bored back to size in the same setup. The hole was located within .0003” and I’m confident in the repair. I should point out I’m in NS, Canada, and found Wengers of Myerstown PA, USA to be super helpful, cheap and very quick to ship parts. They were amazing. Really nice people. Anyway, I changed the filters, oil, strainers, everything, buttoned it back up and took it for a trial. I run a 60” MMM RCK-24B, but eventually disconnected the PTO shaft during the trials. I also later realized I was only running around 1500rpm, lower speed may have added to things. I noticed a prominent “straight cut gear” noise when in HI range on the PTO, under zero load, free to air. Not miserable, but rattly enough that I quit trying. no noise at all in lo range. I took it to my shop and checked it over, with the PTO in neutral, I would spin the rear output PTO and I heard the faint but present noise of the gears. Felt the same also from the mid mount PTO. If turned slowly the noise was not very apparent. When I spun it quickly by hand, it was more noticeable. I want to say like a very faint version of a shift fork being engaged about 50rpm too early,. Not grinding by any means, but a more clackety than I’m comfortable with. I know straight cut gears are noisy, I’m just being overly cautious of the 20 hrs of labor and $600 worth of parts and fluids I have into this. With the PTO in low speed, the mid mount is not engaged, and free wheels very quietly. I drained the oil and removed the Mid PTO housing, and eliminated that as a culprit. I manipulated the gear that the mod mount PTO output shaft meshes to, and had the same result in the various positions, free wheel quiet in LO, some gear noise when in neutral. The noise was detected during runtime with Hi speed engaged, but I couldn’t do any static trials in Hi as it doesn’t turn by hand with the PTO engaged.
My question is, does anyone have a backlash figure for the gears in the trans, I have the WSM, and can find only peripheral gearshafts, they all seem to have a .012” tolerance on backlash. I havent put a dial on mine yet, I just thought I’d reach out to see if anyone has encountered this, or if SOME noise is normal. Everything assembled very nicely and was free wheeling, no binding, all shift forks were functioning as desired. I can’t recall if there was some noise when in high speed, but I didn’t think it was noticeable, but I’m very tuned in to it due to my time investment, so I might be a bit paranoid. Any input is appreciated,
Thanks for your time
