The answer to your puzzle seems obvious: Your memory is incorrect.

What you remember didn't happen...

You appear to believe the front wheels each were pulling, regardless of what the other was doing. Not going to repeat here any "what if's" or examples, since you are not interested in hearing explanations...

It is also possible that over time the tire tread has changed leading to a reduction in performance.

ie - "now I run baloney skins and can't get out of my own way" - lol.
