Greetings from Downunder:D

I have a B1550 (with hydrostatic transmission) which I am currently servicing, but have no manuals for.

Can someone tell me if the rear axle housing (diff housing) has its own oil like the front diff does, or if it is supplied by the hydraulic system?

If I drain the hydraulic oil via the drain plug on the Mid-Mount PTO, will I get the vast majority of the oil out of the system, or are there other points that must be drained also? I know I will never get all the oil out of the hydraulic lines that go to all the rams on the F.E.L., but I would like to get as much as I can out?

Is the front diff / axle housing filled up, or is there a level that it should be filled to, and how do you see if the level is correct?

Cheers.

The 1550 has a common sump for both the tranny and hydraulics, so draining at the mid pto will get most of it. There are drain plugs on either side of the axle that will get the rest. Simple proceedure:)

Thanks koboman.
That leaves only the question about the front diff / axle housing oil level, so anyone have any idea about that please?

Do you have bi-speed turn. The 2 wheel housings are separate from the main axle housing. They need to be drained and refilled seperate from the main axle which should have a level plug somewhere. I need to look at mine again to say for sure.:)

Yes I have Bi Speed Turn, and I know about the wheel hubs / housings.

My question relates to the Differential / axle housing. I think there may be a difference in terminology between our countries:)
I'm not sure what you call it, but I mean the housing that the front crown wheel and pinion gear are inside of, and the front drive shaft is attached to.

I need to go look at mine to be sure but basically if you fill it half full it will be close enough
I will check tonight and post back.

Kuboman, how can I know when it is half full? That is my problem. Is there a level plug, or something like a dip-stick hole to measure it? The filler hole is of no use at all because there is something just inside it which all but covers the hole, so no way to get even a thin wire down there for dip-sticking.

Cheers.

I checked mine and there is no level plug just a drain and fill plugs. Check my manual and they say it takes 2.5L in the main diff housing. With a flashlight you can see the level in there at the right angle. A little extra will not hurt anything.

Let me know if you need more info. I do have the owners manual.

You can get electronic manuals for these tractors at TRACTORSMART.COM. Give them a try if you don't mind electronic manuals, or just keep asking questions. I don't mind helping you out.:)

Thanks for the info and assistance kuboman.
I am surprised that there is no way to check the level as such, so I guess I'll drain and replace with 2.5 litres to be sure it is full.
I have no issues with electronic manuals (although I prefer paper,...old guy thing;)
I'll check out Tractorsmart for sure.

Cheers.

No worries:D
Glad to help. I would not be afraid to add a little extra to the diff. It sure won't hurt anything.
If you want you can print out the manual if you want hard copy. I took my electronic copies to an office supply store that does printing and had them do it. The cost was about 1/3 of the cost from Kubota.

I have submitted my request for the manual, so now it is a matter of wait and see when it arrives. It will be very handy.

Cheers.

No stopping you now. You'll have that tractor figured in no time and then you can give the rest of us advice.
I quite often read the service manual just giggles when I am bored.:D
That is not likely to happen, in fact I will probably be posting a lot more questions in the coming weeks as I decided that it was looking a bit sad, so I have completely stripped all sheet metalwork off it for re-painting, so when I come to put it back together and can't remember where it all went:confused::D

Cheers.
Phill.

P.S. I only got a Parts manual,.....is there a service / workshop manual available as a PDF for free somewhere? I know what you mean, they are generally written in a rare dialect of Chinglish, always good for a giggle:eek:

I did buy a service manual but I think I got it off ebay. There are usually manuals available on ebay for these older machines. You can also try Kubotabooks.com.:D
