I recently picked up a Hardinge Sjogren 5CA plain back chuck. My lathe has a D1-4 spindle, so I found a machine-to-fit D1-4 backing plate on eboy. First, I disassembled the new (to me) chuck for cleaning & re-lubing. All parts looked good, so it was reassembled.

Then I machined the backing plate. Normally these are cast iron, sometimes mild steel, but this one was 304SS. Kind of a PITA. Reduced the thickness from 1.125" to 1.000", reduced the OD from 8.100" to 5.500", drilled and tapped (4) 7/16 x 14 holes on a 4.125" bolt circle, then turned a 4.9995" x .190" s-l1600-1.jpg s-l1600-2.jpg s-l1600.jpg register to fit the recess in the back of the chuck.

This now means my current Key operated 5C Chuck is now surplus, and will go into the Classified section.
Absolutely nothing wrong with it, just always wanted the speed chuck above.

Nice score Bill! I am truly jealous. Bet the run out on that guy is just a few tenths.

You're right, .0002 to .0003 depending where I measure.
