    Assessing water in hydraulic oil

Thanks William After reading this I had to do my own diligence because I didn't realize you COULD boil off the water. But it seems it's possible. Will the fluid circulate if I just leave it running in a field or so I have to actually operate it continuously and keep moving the loader and backhoe?

    Assessing water in hydraulic oil

True. But when you drain and add new fluid, you are diluting the water. Because that new fluid goes into all the nooks and crannies and mixes with the existing fluid. And the final 1% can be captured by the fact that the UDT2 fluid holds 1% of its weight in water. so if I know I'm at 99% fluid...

    Assessing water in hydraulic oil

Thanks. I've certainly been told this before and It's clear that I hadn't removed it all as of last winter when the hydraulic system stopped functioning properly at 11 degrees. And I welcome any mechanic's input on how to get it all. (if theres any avenues available beyond drainign plugs and...

    Assessing water in hydraulic oil

Hi Dan Let me clarify. By sealed, I mean cap in place but it had previously been opened. I KNOW it's where the water came from because I remember thinking how thin it looked when I was adding it and then all of a sudden it thickened. Oh $##!... I drained it that same day. I really do want to...

    Assessing water in hydraulic oil

Operator error. I had a pail of hydraulic fluid that was "sealed" but sitting outdoors for good stretch. You can fill in the blanks... I have drained it twice now. So I don't know whether there is anything else going on. It's a 2021 l3901 stored in a soft shed. I wouldn't expect There to be...

    Assessing water in hydraulic oil

Hello After determining there was still water in the hydraulic oil last winter, I did a second flush and refilled. I just re-drained and, this time, I collected the first bit of oil that came out to assess. The attached picture was taken 18 hours after collection. It was milky all the way...

    Drain port on backhoe

Hi I have the bh77 backhoe on my l3901 Ive been trying to purge water out of the hydraulic system on the tractor but the backhoe was disconnected over the winter and I'd like to drain as much as I can before I hook it back up Are the bolts pictured supposed to be drain ports for hydraulic...

Wintertime hydraulics not working and related maintenance question

Cheap Not garbage but not Udt2. It's the travelers premium they sell at tractor supply I'd like to wait until it's well into the 40s for the next drain but I just don't know whether running it at all in the meantime would be a good idea

Wintertime hydraulics not working and related maintenance question

Truth be told I missed your post before I just refilled it. But I'm committed to cycling it back out again anyway and not running it while below 32 until I'm on the other side of this I like the chicken lamp idea.

Wintertime hydraulics not working and related maintenance question

Well folks, time for an update. I let this thing drain for 13 days. Only about four of those days were enough above freezing to really equal metal water draining out of the tractor. The place where the tractor seized up earlier - in a driveway next to our tenants parking spot - made the...

Wintertime hydraulics not working and related maintenance question

Update: today is started draining the fluid. Man is it goopy. Nice smooth stream and then a few pasty white chunks. I can only assume those are ice chunks. We're right around 32 today and below freezIng nights but we've got a stretch of several days of high 30s to low 40s coming at the end of...

Wintertime hydraulics not working and related maintenance question

Per my opening post, I made the horrific mistake a year ago of adding hydraulic oil that had been sitting outside in a Five gallon pail and SOMEHOW got water in it. I drained it immediately, left it open overnight and refilled it. I can only conclude that this was inadequate. So this time, I...

Wintertime hydraulics not working and related maintenance question

I did hear you but the reason I turned it on was that the tractor mechanic at the dealership where I got the tractor advised me to lift the bucket and the rear, unplug and then lower after I start draining in order to purge what's in the cylinders front and rear. So I was hoping To do exactly...

Wintertime hydraulics not working and related maintenance question

Well here is what the hat filter looks like. I'm not seeing ice crystals. It's 30 degrees today so maybe I waited too long as it was a lot colder yesterday and most of the week for that matter That said, I fired it up and...the pedal still ain't moving the tractor and the stick still ain't...

Wintertime hydraulics not working and related maintenance question

That's reasonable. I was thinking I would supplement that by blowing heat on it but actually they moved the forecast down again and I don't see any thaw happening in the next two weeks. (This is more like what our winters uses to be once upon a time and it's strangely refreshing.) Does anybody...

No offense taken. And I did use udt2. The cheap stuff would just be for the flush

Wintertime hydraulics not working and related maintenance question

The update is that I don't have a warm garage to move this into but Sunday it's supposed to hit 35. Tomorrow I'm getting fluid and extra filters and am gonna pull off the transmission side filter for ice crystals inspection. Then - presuming I confirm water presence - I'll use the warm weather...

Wintertime hydraulics not working and related maintenance question

Nope. Won't move. No response whatsoever when hit the pedal or the bucket control. Did I kill my pump from trying?
