What is "Rear Ballast"? And why do you need it?

    Wondered the same thing.

    Changing to 4 wheel drive

My mx5100 is hard to shift out from the brand new get go. Usually have to lift the front wheels with the FEL. Hate to force it.

    Brush Hog Slip Clutch

My mx5100 hydrostatic trans tractor has a main clutch as well. I shove the clutch with my left foot, then engage the pto switch at idle, then feather the bush hog up to speed letting out the main clutch with my foot. Pto won't turn until the main clutch is engaged.

Kubota recommends being easy on the tractor the first 50 hours (should I even mow?)

I have always understood warming up diesels at low idle is not recommended. The manual for my mx5100 says to warm up at 1500-1700 rpm which is half throttle. I know my Volkswagen diesels I used to drive wouldn't warm up at all at idle. My pto rpm is 2700 which is just about wot.

Will I break the transmission by running chains on rear tires in 4x4?

I agree although many will disagree. I run aggressive studded rear chains on my mx5100 all winter in my snow plowing and logging operations. My dealer warns against front chains especially in my usage where fronts could get strong bites on roots etc. They have seen front damage because of this...

    PTO Soft Start

That is what I do on my mx5100. Depress clutch, engage pto switch, and feather the clutch out slowly to gently engage the bush hog mower. No problem.

Shifting h lo medium and in and out of 4x4

I have a mx5100. Both operations can be sticky. For range selection playing with the treadle helps. Selection on hills is often hard. The sure way I found is not letting the tractor roll to a stop but rather shove clutch and then brake to stop. The selector slides in easily every time...

    Lifting Question

I have same chipper. A good part of the weight, is the all metal frame holding it on the skid. Remove that to start. Then remove some unassembled parts like the heavy discharge blower chute , like 100 pounds or so. By the time you do that it will be a lot lighter. Doesn't take long.

Could I damage the PTO by doing this?

this is my experience as to the original question. I now run a six foot bushog on a mx5100 Kubota. Before that on a ford 641 48 hp with a five footer. Before that I used the five foot hog on a ford 9n that had about 20 hp. I ran this 9n five foot combo 30 years fro 1976 until 2006. The 9n was...
