I did the same.
But I used these quick disconnect /shut off's.
(discovered them while working on a K1200LT)

I got sucked into 'mod fever' and tried the water separator thing for a while but didn't like it. Too cumbersome and pretty much pointless in my opinion. I treat my home heating oil tanks and never had a problem.

Those disconnects are cool, never seen them before.

Maybe trying to do it with the wrong tools?

Flat band pliers maybe a good investment?
Proper tools usually make life easier. But I'm an old lazy guy who prefers a well designed tool free system. Like the system NH used or still uses. Turn couple valves, unscrew the canister. Replace filter. Only tools needed are the fingers. Outside of the purge fitting.

Question regarding those flat band fittings. Are they reusable or better to replace? If needing to replace. Anyone just using those band clamps that tighten with a bolt?

I'm just a user, no formal training but I reuse those flat bands all the time without worry or trouble. I have also replaced them with stainless gear clamps also without having problems. Just my experience

Lived with mine for four years (about 350 hours) before moving it up next to the secondary filter. Couple feet of hose, some shut off valves, no water separator, just the stock filters. Cheap and easy - like me!

You didn't post a picture with the rant - we love pictures! šŸ˜„

Here's mine, .
