Just changed oil and filter in my new 2380. Oil from drain pan was pretty black. Oil in filter was very clean. Is this normal?

Hey Rob welcome to OTT by the way!!

Now a couple questions for a little more detail...
Engine oil was black, engine oil filter was clean?
Hydraulic oil was black (which would be bad), hydraulic oil filter was clean?
Engine oil was black, hydraulic oil filter was clean (did you change the right filter)?

I wouldn't think after 50 hours neither oil should be very bad. Changing them is precautionary to remove any leftover metal bits from manufacturing and break-in.

I'll assume you meant engine oil and filter. If you still have the oil maybe take it to the dealer for a second opinion. If they are reputable they might give you an honest answer. Or send it out for testing.

Thank You for your response. Just to clarify: the motor oil that I drained was black, while oil in the motor oil filter was clear. I thought that maybe I had confused the motor oil filter with the HST filter, but that wasn't the case. I've absolutely confirmed that it is the motor oil filter.
I'll follow up with your suggestion and talk with the dealer. Thanks again.

Diesel oil turns black much more quickly than gasoline engine oil. That part is pretty normal, even after 50 hours.

However, the clean oil in the filter seems concerning, at least to me. If the oil was dirty out of the oil pan but perfectly clean in the filter it seems like maybe the oil is not circulating through the filter as it should.

As @Bee-Positive suggested, a conversation with your dealer might be a good next move.

I'm thinking the same thing.

Could it be a defective oil filter that was pre-stuck in "bypass" mode?

Most older, and these smaller "non-emissions" diesels do soot up the engine oil sooner, which turns it black.

While your draining fluid, I'd suggest pull a drain plug on the front axle for a second ... If it looks good put plug back in ... If it's "bad" let drain and do the other side too ...

I've found that since there is no filter on the front axle, that the first "wear in" hours are pretty rough, and all that junk floatinf around in the "lubricant" can't be good for anything!

Thank you for the info.
I did talk with the dealer's service department (Bret) this morning. He said to not worry, that the drained oil pan oil just looks darker than the oil in the filter, and that if there really was something wrong, the motor would have blown by now. Not sure that I'm terribly comfortable with this.

Your dealer is correct. My 1880 had the same black oil at 50 hrs. Your fine. Do you have Kubota insurance? You are under warranty. Either will cover if it blows .

I'm fairly certain that while it will be a smaller stream of oil coming out of the filter housing, it still shouldn't be clear like new motor oil ... Maybe not quite as solid black in color.

I'd pull just the filter again after another 50 hours and confirm that it's not clear, (then put it back on) you can check the oil color on the dipstick at the same time, just a smear on a white paper towel of both, should be the same oil!

Unless the engine operates differently than a normal engine, the oil is sucked up from the sump by the oil pump, goes thru the filter and then onward to the engine internals. If the filter isn't plugged completely, the bypass should be closed, forcing the oil thru the filter media. If the engine was without oil to the internal parts, chances are there would be vent holes in the oil pan and block from connecting rods exiting the engine.
