Impressive.

You ever consider digging in an exterior staircase leading into the basement?

Still not as ideal as a drive in space, but it’s pretty easy to winch heavy stuff in and out running a skid over concrete steps with steel corners on the risers. If you don’t have a winch, it’s a good excuse to bolt one on the front of your truck. Of course there are often drainage considerations, but it isn’t exactly rocket science to sort those out. With a little creativity, ramp sides can be incorporated into a set of stairs.

Just a thought…

Great stuff there RWS! I wasn't worried about the rope (looks like what we used to make big cable pulls), but was a little on edge regarding the placement. Just going by the pics it looked like it was plenty low on the load. Your setup was excellent and you put a lot of effort into making sure it was more than adequate.

A few of us used a similar setup when we helped a bud move a very large gun safe into his basement. We didn't use skates because we thought the extra friction on the planks would be an advantage. We had it easier though. He had an outside set of steps to the basement and I could drive into his back yard and use the "power -out" on my winch to ease it down the planks.

I like the "surface area” that these 2x12’s offer, and in my head that will "help distribute the load” better….But something is still “not quite right” in my head…..So I decide to sleep on it…..

Besides, I still have to “shore up” the stairs…..
RWS, reading this, I was thinking you sure hit the nail on the head.
But you did a fine job and alls well that ends well!

That was my thought as well. But I did not want to mention it after he put all that work into it already...

The HOA would have a "sh1t fit” if I tried that.

Here is a pic of them at a HOA meeting…..

I had also considered using the friction method, but at the bottom of the stairs is where I thought I needed those skates.

I had modified them some time back, specifically so that the tip of them would not hit and “dig in"

Here is a “before” pic.

Here is an "after pic" showing the “approximate angle of attack” at the base of the stairs
