Saw on the news that J Deere has agreed to settle Right to Repair cases for $99 million. Deere says that software and diagnostic machines will be available to owners. That's all I found.

Available at what price and with what requirements. Devil is in the details.

for me this is a tough one.

Repair yes for sure but not full access to ecu / computers. Sure for the little stuff that has basic technology but surely not the bigger stuff. why??

JD and others has invested tonnes of cash in advancing agriculture in USA, Canada and other advanced countries.
I will hate it if all this is turned over to "others" to steal and reproduce without compensation and taking away advantages us farmers are paying for. Having our countries intellectual property stolen and reproduced for pennies or less overseas takes away our competitive advantage. Dammed if I would vote for another country stealling our hard invented, developed and paid for technologies.

Google / youtube some of these.... having someone / somewhere cloned / stolen for pennies can't be allowed.

- See & Spray saving 3/4 on our spray chemical bills
- exactshot for fertilizer
- fully autonomous tractors like the 8r is going to revolutionize our farms as they run 24/7 without an operator
- AI-driven precision sprayers, seeders, and fertiler placers using the new computer vision sprayers and planters and seeders will cut some of our costs maybe 80%.
- JD link so we can manage, track, run, maintain and change farming decisions from our office desks.
-the G5 displays and auto turn
- etc....

Sure we should be able to change our oil, fix flats, swap out injectors but free full access to the tech with access to all this advanced technology??? I wouldn't think free access to all the computer functions is a good thing.

flame on!!! my skin is thick but I think giving those who want to knock off our advanteages a hard time is not a bad thing.

cheers... i've ripped before / sure to be ripped again.

China has probably hacked there systems already and stole there information. Just like DoD getting hacked by them. Don’t agree on anyone getting technical information without paying for it.

Why should this be any different than automobiles and trucks?

It shouldn't be and one reason why many have sold their $$$$$$ fancy new machines and gone back to 'old skool' tractors and combines.

Anyone who owns 'computered combines ' or tractors should be able to plug in an OBD-II style READER and easily get 100% of the error codes. Notice I said READER and NOT 'tuner'. A 'tuner' is what the 'rolling coal' guys use to MODIFY their trucks engines.

Owners should NOT have to pay for a dealer computer to 'tune' the computer when an injector is replaced. That could easily be done automatically during the Power up self test phase after turning the ignition key on.

That’s good, it’s because they probably need it! 😂.

clearly I am not loyal to the beholden to green…Snarky comment aside, actually I am normally all for deregulation, however in this case I do appreciate that 45-47 was looking out for the folks that make the food.

normally the MFGrs love regulations that force the new safety and other mandated regulations as it’s a justifiable reason to raise the price of their goods sold and blame someone else and take a percent increase in the profit. Win win for the manufactures.

Telling people what they can’t and can’t fix on their product ranks right up there with housing associations and with charging fees to use the software/hardware on the products you buy to turn the feature on.

it’s a data point of the manufacturer that does stuff like that…clearly that was not their (in this case Green’s) founders point of view…its a shame when bean counters take over.
