I did it that way so that I and my delightful kitteh can move in and amongst various cultures without question.

Just an update: It was very easy, guess I was intimidated about the picture. Took quite a few pictures but the first one I submitted worked. Helpful hints: crop the picture before you download from phone to pc, makes the file smaller and faster to download. Use Bluetooth and not email. Once in pc enhance the brightness if the background is not "white" enough. I got my renewed passport back in about 2 weeks but my wife's took a few weeks longer for some reason, we applied the same time.
Hope this helps.

I received an email from the Department of State on 3/19 that my application for a new passport was approved and that my passport is being printed. I was also told that I should receive my new passport on or around 3/25. I applied online on 2/23 so around four weeks from application to receiving ... in theory. I need to stop by the Post Office since I haven't received a USPS tracking number.

Wife and I both applied the old-fashioned way via mail, with photos done at the local AAA office. Apps were mailed on March 27, and delivered to the Philly office on March 31 (mine) and April 3 (wife's). Don't ask how they got separated for four days - It's USPS!

Anyway, I got my new passport on April 13, and wife got hers on the 15th. Two weeks to process and deliver.

There's some person waiting by the mailbox every morning at the DoS just hoping that someone, anyone, likes to go old school! Meanwhile, a whole team of people stuck in front of computer screens are knocking back Redbulls as they're inundated by electronic submissions with no end in sight. 😂😂😂
